Windows 7 ask's "enter network password" when accessing Window XP Machine

Hi All,

I have two PC's one with Windows XP Pro & the other with Windows 7 Pro. I have set up a network & it seems to be working but when i try to access my XP Machine from Windows 7 in ask me to Enter Network Password. I have tried to enter my login password & that did not work, i tried to turn off the password from teh xp machine and it still asks. What can i do to fix this problem. From my xp machine i can access the windows 7 pc fine so i dont understand why W7 is asking for this network password.

Did some searches on the net and below is what i did to solve the problem that was occuring

Permitting Network Access Without a Password

To allow users to log onto their computers without a password and then access the XP Professional machine without a password, you must make a security policy change:

Go to Control Panel | Performance and Maintenance | Administrative Tools | Local Security Policy.
Expand Local Policies | Security Options.
Double-click Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console login only, which is enabled by default. Disable this option and click OK.

this stopped the network access dialog box appearing when tryin to access my xp machine from windows 7 ! !

There is a real simple way of sorting this problem out on a windows 7 machine.....

Start > Computer > Network (left drop down column) > Network and Sharing Centre > Change Advanced Sharing Settings > Scroll down to "Password Protected Sharing" > Turn Of Password Protected Sharing.

Job Done!!

Try disable a Guest password on Windows XP.

I have an identical problem as BrEnT022 and also use Kaspersky 2010 on both my XP and W7 machines. My XP is not Professional however. The apparent solution you found directs me to the Control Panel > Performance and Maintenence>Administrative Tools >Local Security Policy... Stop right there. Performance and Maintenance is not an option on my Control Panel. Administrative Tools are but Local Security Policy is not under that heading. So, I am no nearer solving my problem. My XP machine can see my W7 machine - access it's files and modify them if required. What I can't do is access my XP machine from my W7 machine because it insists on knowing the password.

I went to www.nirsoft.net that provided me with a facility to recover my Network Password - and sure enough it revealed the password I thought it might be. Did it work? No it did not. So, what now ? Any ideas welcome.

As far as ChrisDalby's post of 23rd April is concerned - my W7 machine is already set as described. ie: Turn Off Password Protected Sharing. Makes no difference - sorry.
