Windows 7 ask's "enter network password" when accessing Window XP Machine

Hi All,

I have two PC's one with Windows XP Pro & the other with Windows 7 Pro. I have set up a network & it seems to be working but when i try to access my XP Machine from Windows 7 in ask me to Enter Network Password. I have tried to enter my login password & that did not work, i tried to turn off the password from teh xp machine and it still asks. What can i do to fix this problem. From my xp machine i can access the windows 7 pc fine so i dont understand why W7 is asking for this network password.

Did some searches on the net and below is what i did to solve the problem that was occuring

Permitting Network Access Without a Password

To allow users to log onto their computers without a password and then access the XP Professional machine without a password, you must make a security policy change:

  1. Go to Control Panel | Performance and Maintenance | Administrative Tools | Local Security Policy.
  2. Expand Local Policies | Security Options.
  3. Double-click Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console login only, which is enabled by default. Disable this option and click OK.

this stopped the network access dialog box appearing when tryin to access my xp machine from windows 7 ! !

    Man you're GOOD! I was doing all this complicated admin stuff trying to find the hole - I saw your post and I thought, "what the ____ has the time gotta do with it?!!" - But it WORKS!! Thanks mate!

    I have Windows 7 on my laptop and windows XP SP3 on a desktop, I got into a little snag when I was trying to connect the windows 7 to XP it kept asking me to "Enter Network Password" well my problem was solved when I remembered it was a fresh install of XP and I forgot to turn on the "Network Sharing And Security" feature which you can do by:

    right clicking on any folder (you have access to and/or you are an Admin) and clicking the Sharing tab and then go down to "Network Sharing And Security" area and click on the ...if you understand..." it will enable sharing.

    Now go back to windows 7 and when you click on the computer in question it should let you gain access.

    let me say that it may not be the right thing for you but just another way to the solution to someone's problem.

    Also I was reading around and someone said to disable the guest account on windows 7 well if you do this you will be unable to gain access from XP to Win7 so KEEP the GUEST account in Win7 ENABLED.

    I've experienced the same problem for several days lately.  I run 4 PCs in a network. One machine runs W7, the other 3 run Windows 2000.  One of the Windows 2000 PCs stopped allowing a connection with the message 'Enter Network Password'.  The other 2 Windows 2000 PCs did not have the problem.  After following the discussion in this forum I been trying everything suggest (that applied to Windows 2000) with no success.  Finally I notices the 2 PCs running Windows 2000 that had the 'wrong' time on them were working (the time was 1 hour behind the Windows 7 PC).  The PC running Windows 2000 that DID NOT WORK had the time that matched the time on the Windows 7 PC.  I reset the PC (Windows 2000) to 1 hour behind the Windows 7 PC and now it connectes.  I tried several different times any only when set about 1 hour behind the Windows 7 PC does it work. 

    Now Windows 7 can talk with all the Windows 2000 PCs.  I'm guessing it may have something to do with the either the 'Time Zone' setting or the 'Automatically adjust clock for daylight saving changes'  I haven't tested those two completely.

    This fixes works with Windows 2000.  I'm not using W-XP so I can't comment on if it work with XP.  But it was a quick fix without have to adjust the 'security areas' within the OS.  I hope this is of help to someone.

    Hi BrEnT022 ,

    I tried this solution on my computer, and got to the end of #1.  After I click Administrative Tools, the next menu doesn't have an option of "Local Security Policy".  Does anyone know what I am doing wrong, or why this is?  I run Windows 7 XP.
