Windows 7 ask's "enter network password" when accessing Window XP Machine

Hi All,

I have two PC's one with Windows XP Pro & the other with Windows 7 Pro. I have set up a network & it seems to be working but when i try to access my XP Machine from Windows 7 in ask me to Enter Network Password. I have tried to enter my login password & that did not work, i tried to turn off the password from teh xp machine and it still asks. What can i do to fix this problem. From my xp machine i can access the windows 7 pc fine so i dont understand why W7 is asking for this network password.

Did some searches on the net and below is what i did to solve the problem that was occuring

Permitting Network Access Without a Password

To allow users to log onto their computers without a password and then access the XP Professional machine without a password, you must make a security policy change:

  1. Go to Control Panel | Performance and Maintenance | Administrative Tools | Local Security Policy.
  2. Expand Local Policies | Security Options.
  3. Double-click Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console login only, which is enabled by default. Disable this option and click OK.

this stopped the network access dialog box appearing when tryin to access my xp machine from windows 7 ! !

    Hi.  I had this problem too and I went through all these suggestions about file sharing and nothing worked. Everything was set up just as everyone suggested. I am trying to connect a Windows 7 netbook with the Starter version to a home network, and my Vista desktop machine.  I can see the machine from the netbook but when I try and connect I get the "enter network password" thing all the time, and it does not matter what I enter, it persisted.

    I went onto the Windows 7 netbook and went to Control Panel then User Accounts and Family Safety then Credential Manager then Manage Windows Credentials.  When I got there, I found that there was a "credential" set up for my PC.  Initially I clicked on edit and set my own password, but this did not work. Then I went back and clicked "remove credential from the vault".  This removed my PC from the list of windows credentials and now it all works just fine.

    I am not really sure what a vault is, but I am very glad I have sorted this out!!

    i am using kaspersky internet secuirty 2010 at the moment, with the msconfig where do i actaully go because there are all these toolbars and i dont understand what to turn off on etc.....so do u think posting this question in a relevant virus thread mite help?
