Windows 7 ask's "enter network password" when accessing Window XP Machine

Hi All,

I have two PC's one with Windows XP Pro & the other with Windows 7 Pro. I have set up a network & it seems to be working but when i try to access my XP Machine from Windows 7 in ask me to Enter Network Password. I have tried to enter my login password & that did not work, i tried to turn off the password from teh xp machine and it still asks. What can i do to fix this problem. From my xp machine i can access the windows 7 pc fine so i dont understand why W7 is asking for this network password.

Did some searches on the net and below is what i did to solve the problem that was occuring

Permitting Network Access Without a Password

To allow users to log onto their computers without a password and then access the XP Professional machine without a password, you must make a security policy change:

  1. Go to Control Panel | Performance and Maintenance | Administrative Tools | Local Security Policy.
  2. Expand Local Policies | Security Options.
  3. Double-click Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console login only, which is enabled by default. Disable this option and click OK.

this stopped the network access dialog box appearing when tryin to access my xp machine from windows 7 ! !

    Man you're GOOD! I was doing all this complicated admin stuff trying to find the hole - I saw your post and I thought, "what the ____ has the time gotta do with it?!!" - But it WORKS!! Thanks mate!

    I have Windows 7 on my laptop and windows XP SP3 on a desktop, I got into a little snag when I was trying to connect the windows 7 to XP it kept asking me to "Enter Network Password" well my problem was solved when I remembered it was a fresh install of XP and I forgot to turn on the "Network Sharing And Security" feature which you can do by:

    right clicking on any folder (you have access to and/or you are an Admin) and clicking the Sharing tab and then go down to "Network Sharing And Security" area and click on the ...if you understand..." it will enable sharing.

    Now go back to windows 7 and when you click on the computer in question it should let you gain access.

    let me say that it may not be the right thing for you but just another way to the solution to someone's problem.

    Also I was reading around and someone said to disable the guest account on windows 7 well if you do this you will be unable to gain access from XP to Win7 so KEEP the GUEST account in Win7 ENABLED.

    New Windows 7 won't connect to XP server keeps putting up a name and password.

    I read and read and read everyone's comments. I couldn't find the answer, but I made all of the changes and still nothing happened.. . till finally.

    When I logged in, and as I was talking to tech support, I clicked on the XP machine that was showing up in my network, and it brought up the ID and password. I typed in the name of the computer that I was trying to connect to, and left the password black, and clicked keep this in credentials. 

    Well so far that has opened the door to my server, now to see if the other computers on the network will do it too. So far they haven't but who knows. 

    MICROSOFT SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES.

    yeh it was quite confusing, i asked a few people that i know that were computer techs and knew about networking and there solutions didnt help, it was a puzzling problem but lucky i stumbled onto this website and tried there solutions as in my case it worked, now am all connected, including printer so am very happy! ! :)
