Trying to run sfc/scannow and response is "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service"

Originally, this started when I was trying to install some statistical software (JMP8) that should be supported by Windows 7.  I kept getting "the application could not start because its side by side configuration is incorrect"

While researching that for Windows 7, I ran across a suggestion to run sfc/scannow in the command prompt.  When I try to do that, I get the error listed above:  Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service.

Any suggestions?

I  had  this issue and all the steps described in this and other internet posts led me  to a dead end of errors. 

However, I then discovered that somehow almost all my services had  gotten reset to "disabled". This was causing my original problems (network connectivity among them) and this problems.

Changing the services settings fixed my problems

To get to services type services in the search programs box on the start menu, then right click to run it as administrator.

    if you make sure that service is set to "automatic" then you shouldn't have that problem.

    It is not the fastest, compared to Windows 7 and 8 it is the slowest, based on my experience after running it on two different machines. Uses up less space is meaningless, after two years of enforced updates, enforced because Windows 10 allows no control over what is updated, all that less space will be gone. Windows has an old habit of being fast when brand new, and over time deteriorating and deteriorating to where fast is a long gone dream. With the start button and start menu unresponsive, it is impossible to call Windows 10, fast.

    it's a lot faster than windows 7 and windows 8.

    and you can disable automatic updates in the pro and enterprise editions

    if you maintenance it and tweak it properly, it will be fast as long as you keep that up

    if the start button and start menu are unresponsive, there are certain commands you can enter in powershell that fix that problem within seconds...
