Trying to run sfc/scannow and response is "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service"

Originally, this started when I was trying to install some statistical software (JMP8) that should be supported by Windows 7.  I kept getting "the application could not start because its side by side configuration is incorrect"

While researching that for Windows 7, I ran across a suggestion to run sfc/scannow in the command prompt.  When I try to do that, I get the error listed above:  Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service.

Any suggestions?

I  had  this issue and all the steps described in this and other internet posts led me  to a dead end of errors. 

However, I then discovered that somehow almost all my services had  gotten reset to "disabled". This was causing my original problems (network connectivity among them) and this problems.

Changing the services settings fixed my problems

To get to services type services in the search programs box on the start menu, then right click to run it as administrator.

    I have tried all the suggestions given over the last 5 pages and none of them work with my version of windows 10.

    I still get windows resource protection could not start the repair service

    I upgraded from windows 7 ultimate to windows 10 about 5 or 6 weeks ago so have no installation disks to try with for windows 10.

    the reason I wanted to run sfc was I noticed my calc.exe program had stopped working today. when looking at task manager I see it startup and then immediately close. I have a feeling there may be more problems but it is impossible to check as SFC does not work.

    both services mentioned are running

    You won't get a legitimate response from the Windows 10 team. I have seen them deliberately ignore users. Occasionally someone will come up to blame the computer manufacturer, hardware or other installed software. From what I know the system policies have been altered to interfere with your ability to run sfc. Microsoft is on a path to sell advertising to increase revenue which means removing any ability of a user to block the advertising. Removing control of programs is a step in that direction. They are doing it inch by inch thinking it wont be noticed. IT pros are going along with this being offered advertising revenue from Apps.

    that would not surprise me but being able to fix a broken OS should not be one that they stop supporting.

    that would be a very short sighted approach surely.

    there must be some way to get sfc to work, or be able to repair broken or corrupted files. after all it has been there in almost every other version of windows
