Trying to run sfc/scannow and response is "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service"

Originally, this started when I was trying to install some statistical software (JMP8) that should be supported by Windows 7.  I kept getting "the application could not start because its side by side configuration is incorrect"

While researching that for Windows 7, I ran across a suggestion to run sfc/scannow in the command prompt.  When I try to do that, I get the error listed above:  Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service.

Any suggestions?

I  had  this issue and all the steps described in this and other internet posts led me  to a dead end of errors. 

However, I then discovered that somehow almost all my services had  gotten reset to "disabled". This was causing my original problems (network connectivity among them) and this problems.

Changing the services settings fixed my problems

To get to services type services in the search programs box on the start menu, then right click to run it as administrator.

    [SOLVED]

    Same issue with several Win 8/8.1 machines.

    Instead of searching for 'cmd' or using start menu- shortcuts, you should browse to the actual folder where cmd.exe islocated.

    1. Open Explorer and browse to C:\Windows\system32 and right-click on cmd.exe
    2. Click 'Run as Administrator'
    3. Type sfc /scannow
    4. SUCCESS

    No matter which way I try it.........no scan.   I have "windows module installer" "started" and on "manual".....

    No soap.............I'm really having some issues with my machine  W. 7 64 bit O.S.   No uninstall on updates.  Almost all of my programs listed on "Revo uninstall" are gone.  At computer>uninstall programs...same thing.  All programs listed are gone except three microsoft software downloads,  Restore does not work either.  

    Any help would be appreciated.

    This worked for me to start sfc /scannow for Windows 8.1.

    The service was stopped and I had to enable it.

    1. task manager to bring up services.
    2. find "TrustedInstaller" service
    3. Right click and "open services"
    4. scroll down to "Windows Modules Installer" right click and Properties
    5. Startup type: "manual"
    6. In the same window click "start"

    this enabled the service and let my scannow do its thing... now hopefully that fixes my issue.
