LG DVD-RAM Drive not reading discs in Windows 7

Title pretty much sums it up....

I have 7 installed and it's running great!  But if I put anything into the drive to load onto the system it doesn't spin it up.  I can see the drive in My Computer, but it still thinks that CD1 of World of Warcraft is inside of it, but it didn't spin up that disc either.

I had a bunch of things turned off during the install (HyperTransport, IDE, FDD), should I turn everything off again and try to load it up, just to turn it all back on later?  Or is there a known fix?  Exact model is the GH22NS30.

Hi Rustedbucket,

Thanks for posting to the Getting Ready for Windows 7 communtiy forum.

Try deleting the filters in the registry, see if this helps to resolve this.

Remember to backup the registry to external media prior to editting the registry.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue. 2. Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Caution There can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 2**. You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilters values. To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the Default data value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class data value is CDROM**. 3. In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete. 4. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry. 5. In the right pane, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete. 6. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry. 7. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

    I had a similar problem with my Plextor PX-880SA SATA CD/DVD drive. I was able to complete a clean install of Windows 7 on my newly built computer (installed from the BIOS), but as soon as I inserted any type of CD or DVD into the drive when working in Windows 7, nothing was recognized. I kept receiving an error message asking me to insert a disk. The drive was obviously installed and working correctly because I was able to install the operating system using the drive. I noted in Device Manager that my drive (and all Plextor drives - per the Plextor website) uses the standard Microsoft driver (6.1.7600.16385 issued June 21, 2006) and that there were no updated drivers available from Plextor or Microsoft.

    I found a potential solution in a thread in one of these forums after searching around for about a day. Refer to the response from betavirus11 on September 26, 2009 in the following thread.(http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/GettingReadyforWindows7/thread/80885883-a566-4bda-941e-fe156048cffc/). Microsoft seemed to have no answers as every response from them regarding this problem was asking people to delete upper and lower filters in their registries when those filters do not exist (as they did not exist for me either).

    The solution that worked for me was very easy:

    1. Type "disk management" into the Windows Start Menu search field.
    2. Select "Create and format hard drive partitions." This opens the Disk Management window. This window can also be accessed through the Control Panel (Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management [under the Storage category]).
    3. Your optical drive should be listed along with any hard disks on your system.
    4. Right-click on your optical drive's name and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths..."
    5. Reassign your drive to a different letter than the one that it is currently assigned. (For example, my drive had been automatically assigned to "D:" so I changed it to "A:")
    6. Restart your computer
    7. Insert a CD or DVD into your drive and try accessing it from Windows Media Player.

    This worked for me the first time without having to do anything else.

    I have 4 of those, 2 in each in 2 PC's in the house, no issues. I also have 2 LG 22NS30's that running without a hitch either. I wonder if it is a hardware/software with some MB's, controllers, or a combination of all when used together. all of my MB's are 680i's.

    Thanks for the update dale_001, but after the firmware update this LG Super Multi just wont hunt. LG22LS30 updated to Ver:1.03 as of 10/26/09 and still a stutter or nothing at all from my drive that performed very well in XP . I know this OS is new (Win 7) but its been in beta for almost a year and this should have been resolved by now. Rustedbucket who initiated this thread brought up this issue back in May. In addition to my optical drive problem, my on-board sound that is 5.1 capable and worked fine with XP has also been neutered in Win 7 to plain ol' Stereo.

    I am still looking for a solution or a "known issue" response in regards to LG drives not reading discs under Windows 7.  I have posted on this forum multiple times and have been given suggestions by moderators (all of which I have attempted).

    Please, I still am using a machine that does not have a CD/DVD drive that reads.  Here is a list of EVERYTHING that I have done to rectify the situation (mods, please note that I HAVE attempted the Upper/Lowerfilters fix and that the Upper/Lowerfilter entries DID NOT exist; note that Devcon confirms that the filters do not exist).

    The drive model is:

    LG GH22NS30 Super Multi - DVD±RW (±R DL) / DVD-RAM drive - Serial ATA - 48x (CD) / 16x (DVD) 48x (CD) / 20x (DVD±R) / 12x (DVD-R DL) / 16x (DVD+R DL) 32x (CD) / 6x (DVD-RW) / 8x (DVD+RW) / 12x (DVD-RAM) - Internal - Black

    -- Drive is recognized by Windows 7 (can be seen in Explorer and Device Manager)

    -- BIOS will recognize discs and prompt for booting (should the disc be a boot disc)

    -- I have tried removing the Upper and LowerFilters in the registry; NEITHER value existed when I searched for them

    -- I have uninstalled the drive, both physically and via device manager

    -- I have run Devcon to determine the parameters of the drive; this is the resulting information:

    There is new firmware out for this drive model on LG's site. Looks like you are on Firmware version 1.02:
