LG DVD-RAM Drive not reading discs in Windows 7

Title pretty much sums it up....

I have 7 installed and it's running great!  But if I put anything into the drive to load onto the system it doesn't spin it up.  I can see the drive in My Computer, but it still thinks that CD1 of World of Warcraft is inside of it, but it didn't spin up that disc either.

I had a bunch of things turned off during the install (HyperTransport, IDE, FDD), should I turn everything off again and try to load it up, just to turn it all back on later?  Or is there a known fix?  Exact model is the GH22NS30.

Hi Rustedbucket,

Thanks for posting to the Getting Ready for Windows 7 communtiy forum.

Try deleting the filters in the registry, see if this helps to resolve this.

Remember to backup the registry to external media prior to editting the registry.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue. 2. Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Caution There can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 2**. You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilters values. To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the Default data value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class data value is CDROM**. 3. In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete. 4. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry. 5. In the right pane, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete. 6. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry. 7. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

    I've been having a very similar problem, however, I have narrowed it down a bit.  If I insert a DVD or CD into either of my optical drives I loose my mouse.  However, if I log off, using the keyboard and then log back on and then open the CD or DVD in anything besides Windows Media Player, it runs just fine!  So, my conclusion is that it is Windows Media Player that I have a problem with. 

    So the question is, how can I update Windows Media Player?  I tried to install the latest version and it wouldn't allow me to.

    Nobody else has mentioned Lite-On. I replaced a three-year-old SATA LG drive because LG told me it is not compatible with 7. The drive worked perfectly with XP, which is still on the dual boot machine. The new Lite-On works perfectly with XP. I'm running Win7 64 bit on the new partition, and nothing anyone has described above works. Lite-On limits interaction to a rather lame chat interface which is capriciously staffed. For that reason alone, I would not recommend buying from them.

    Yesterday I was told that there is and will be no firmware update, and that they use the generic Windows driver. Since I had a strange installation experience -- staring with 32 bit, because my custom-built machine is 3 years old... Somehow as things unfolded, Win 7 32bit recognized a 64 bit processor (who knew? The man who built it had also forgotten how proactive he convinced me to be) and morphed the OS into 64 bit. Yowzah! But perhaps the driver is corrupt. I snagged the driver from Hubby's brand new 64 bit system which runs the DVD drive just fine, but can't swap it in because I don't have Permission in system32.

    AAAAaaaagh! I've already replaced the drive once, with a Win7 compatible model.

    This issue is not solved.

    At least I can still boot back to XP and burn disks to copy contents to hard drive. But dang! I expect more and better.

    Mine's the SATA version (Both my drives are SATA) and so this isn't likely to fix it.

    Still DVD-drive less after nearly 3 months.

    Not that impressed...

    Hey all.

    I too have an LG Multi DVD drive and I to have had the exact same problem with both 64bit and 32bit Windows 7 Pro.

    Searched high and low for a solution but to no avail. I think I might consider getting a SATA DVD Burner and see how that goes.

    But im afraid its just going to produce the same results.
