LG DVD-RAM Drive not reading discs in Windows 7

Title pretty much sums it up....

I have 7 installed and it's running great! But if I put anything into the drive to load onto the system it doesn't spin it up. I can see the drive in My Computer, but it still thinks that CD1 of World of Warcraft is inside of it, but it didn't spin up that disc either.

I had a bunch of things turned off during the install (HyperTransport, IDE, FDD), should I turn everything off again and try to load it up, just to turn it all back on later? Or is there a known fix? Exact model is the GH22NS30.

Hi Rustedbucket,

Thanks for posting to the Getting Ready for Windows 7 communtiy forum.

Try deleting the filters in the registry, see if this helps to resolve this.

Remember to backup the registry to external media prior to editting the registry.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue. 2. Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Caution There can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 2**. You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilters values. To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the Default data value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class data value is CDROM**. 3. In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete. 4. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry. 5. In the right pane, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete. 6. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry. 7. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

You and I have different drives but we're experiencing the same problems. I've seen similar posts to this on various other forums as well. I'm using the LG | GH22LS50 SATA LS, it's a LightScribe model. I called LG and they admitted that ALL of their optical drives were having issues running with Windows 7. They told me because I am running the drive on a Release Candidate and not the complete, end stage RTM OS that I would not be eligible for a defective merchandise return.

So with no alternative, I turned to MicroCenter and picked up a comparable HP model for about $50 and installed it. It works fine...for now. I'm putting my LG Drive on Craigslist for about $10 under retail in hopes of getting some of my money back.

Since my LG Drive worked fine initially until those "Critical Updates" were installed via the Windows Update Service I'm thinking it's got something to do with that. There's probably something in those updates that is breaking the LG Drivers since it's happening to all of the LG Optical Drives. I would encourage Mircosoft to take a look at their OS Updates for Windows 7 and see if there is something in there that is disabling or jacking something up on the LG Drivers. I would encourage LG to do the same.

These are the kinds of things that happen when you run a Release Candidate. You can't really be mad at Microsoft because they're looking for us to find errors just like this. We made the choice to install the RC instead of just buying a copy of Vista and getting a free trade up when the OS is completed. Inconvenience is to be expected. I am annoyed that I might be out $50 though.

I'll take a look at my system tonight and see what those Critical Updates were...there's got to be something in there, my drive was fine before that hit my system. Take a look at your system too...see if you got the updates right as your drive stopped working too.

I am having this exact same problem. I installed 7RC on my custom build about a week ago and everything was fine then it just stopped. Rustedbucket has described it perfectly. It loads in the BIOS, the Device Manager recognizes it, it just wont read anything. I can do a live boot from DVD so I know it's not the drive. I've successfully booted to Ubuntu and BackTrack3 several times on live linux DVDs. The device shows in Windows...just won't read.

I pulled up the system history, and I saw that there were 2 critical updates from Windows that my system pulled down automatically and installed around the time it stoped working. I did a system restore but that didn't help.

Next I uninstalled the drive from the Device Manager, no success there either.

I pulled up the Registry Editor...but the specific "Upper" and "Lower" filters were not present for me to delete.

What's next?

I'm running a custom build system;

Intel Q9550 Core2Quad 2.83GHz

8GB DDR3 RAM

4TB SATA 7200RPM HDD in RAID 0

XFX GTX 260 893MB DDR32000 GPU

Windows 7RC x64

Hopefully your post will bring some answers, John. As you can see, I've gone almost a full month since I've had a response concerning this issue. All I really need to know, I guess, is that this is a known issue and that it will be rectified at the retail launch. Sure, I can buy another drive, but since this one is brand new, and I know that it isn't broken, why bother?

I've posted on multiple other Windows7 forums and have been getting much of the same response there...nothing. Please, someone, let us know if there is a fix or would a moderator/developer just verify the issue.

I have the exact same problem with inspiron1545. no upper or lower filters to remove. I need my disc drive.
