Laptop hangs up at Classpnp.sys file.

So I installed Windows 7 the other night on my laptop. I did the driver updates and installed Norton. I also installed Office 2007. Then I shut it down for the night. The next day I turned it back on to install a few more things. A friend recommended that I install Ad-Aware, so I did, and ran it. I've used it on a few of my machines before with no problems. I installed a couple more programs (SANDRA & CPU-ID) then I shut it down for the night. It stalled on shutdown. I didn't think anything about it and after about 20 minutes I did the power-off. I started it up the next day and it now hangs at the starting windows screen. I've tried the following with all the same results:

System repair - hangs at the repair screen
Start normally - hangs at the starting windows screen
Start in safe mode - hangs at the classpnp.sys file
Start in safe mode with command prompt - hangs at the classpnp.sys file
start in safe mode with networking - hangs at the classpnp.sys file

I've even tried to put in the windows 7 disc back in to do a re-install and it hangs at the starting windows screen.

It seems like no matter what I try I get the hang up at the windows starting screen.

Someone help, please!!!

So the other night I tried a few more things with all the same results. Here's what I tried:

I bought a second gig of ram, so I tried swopping out one stick, then the other - same results.
I bought a hard drive enclosure, removed the hard drive, formatted it with another computer, made sure I could save things to it, re-installed hard drive, booted from CD - same results.
I bought a brand new hard drive, installed it, booted from CD - same results.
Put old hard drive back in with both sticks of ram - same results.

After reviewing a few things, I found that when Windows gets to the "Starting Windows" screen, it's checking your hardware to make sure that things are OK. Well, my hard drive, RAM, CD Drive, and Video Card are OK (I get all the right video stuff), so there's only a couple of things left, and one is the motherboard. So, I believe that there is a hardware issue that is not allowing Win7 to completely load.

Go into your bios and check the hard drive configuration. Once I reverted back to IDE the system booted as normal. You may have to do the opposite!!!

At all times my system hung at classpnp.sys as advertised. Let me know if this fixed

I have this same problem with the same results except it will start to the safe mode and safe mode with comand prompt

but not to safe mode with networking. If someone has the link or information, please submit. Thanks, Duane

THIS ISSUE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH CLASSPNP.SYS, IMO.

THIS ISSUE IS DUE, AT LEAST IN MY CASE, TO AN UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME ERROR (STOP) AT ADDRESS ->

0x000000ED (0xFFFFFA8007D108D0, 0xFFFFFFFFC0000185, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000)

THE ISSUE BEGAN AS AN INABILITY TO SCAN, MODIFY, DEFRAGMENT, ETC HARD DRIVES AFTER I DECOMPRESSED A HARD DRIVE (SECONDARY D: ) WITH INDEXING ENABLED. FOR SOME TIME I WAS ABLE TO START WINDOWS AFTER A FAILED ATTEMPT TO SCAN DISK AT BIOS-LOAD, WINDOWS SAID STARTUP FILES WERE CORRUPTED OR MISSING, SOMETIMES IT WOULD HANG AND REBOOT, THEN LOAD. EARLIER TODAY, IT REFUSES TO LOAD ALTOGETHER. IT MAY HANG ON CLASSPNP.SYS, BUT I FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE THAT IS THE ISSUE.

SYSTEM RESTORE DVD WILL NOT LOAD, FREEZES, MOUSE POINTER/TOUCHPAD FUNCTIONAL.

STARTUP REPAIR WILL NOT LOAD, FREEZES, MOUSE POINTER/TOUCHPAD FUNCTIONAL.

WINDOWS CRASHES ON NORMAL STARTUP WITH ABOVE ERROR (WITH AUTO-CRASH REBOOT DISABLED TO SEE THE ERROR SCREEN)

SAFE MODE WILL NOT START, IN ANY MANNER, FREEZES ON CLASSPNP.SYS FOR A MINUTE OR SO THEN REBOOTS, RINSE AND REPEAT.

IT SEEMS TO ME THAT MY HIDDEN PARTITION MAY BE CORRUPTED, AS I CANNOT LOAD THE DATA IN IT TO GET TO A COMMAND PROMT TO RUN FDISK OR ANY OTHER OPTION THERE, AS SYSTEM RESTORE DVD STILL NEEDS THIS PARTITION INTACT, I BELIEVE. COULD ALSO BE THAT WINDOWS IS TRYING TO LOAD FROM AN INCORRECT ADDRESS IN MEMORY, THOUGH I THINK THERE ARE NOT MANY WAYS TO SOLVE THAT ISSUE UNLESS YOU CAN LOAD A COMMAND PROMPT. CLASSIC CONUMDRUM.

I RUN AN ASUS G73JH, WIN7 64, INTEL CORE i7 CPU, 8G RAM, DUAL 500Mb HD, ATI HD5400 SERIES GPU, DRIVE C: PRIMARY, DRIVE D: SCONDARY, DATA I NEED TO GET STORED THERE THANKFULLY.

Hello,

I know this post is a little old but we got the same error here.

The problem is more complicated.. I explain :

I'm in enterprise, and we're crypting HDD with Checkpoint with W7 enterprise sp1 ..

We made a lot of test with this "CLASSPNP" problem.

Upgrade the bios : No results..

Reset the bios : no results..

Put the HDD in bay with another disk to boot, still hang up on CLASSPNP.sys.

Type this command with the repair disk : bootrec.exe /fixmbr worked sometimes.. (2 on 10 approximately).

We have not access on the disk with the repair disk due to Checkpoint so we can't do a checkdisk (disk appear in RAW).

If you have some idea about it. We can do some test for the people, and for us in the sametime.

PS : sorry for my english, i'm french..

Oh i forgot.. When we let the computer hanging on CLASSPNP.sys (in safe mode) it will reboot and start normaly after 20 minutes.. 1 hour, 2 hours.. no real reason, no logs, no real fix times..
