I have a Windows 7 pc, a laptop running XP and a USB flash drive that I would like to use to back up files. It works on the laptop, and it did work first of all on the pc. But now I get a message saying device not recognised due to malfunction of device. And in device manager I'm told that it's an error 43 code. I'd be grateful for any advice; also, should I try buying a new memory stick/flashdrive exclusively for the pc? I've tied uninstalling the device and restarting the computer, but to no avail.

As I have mentioned periodically on this forum: quite often, the problem arises because a USB connected device has not been properly ejected. The problem can be rectified merely by plugging the device into a different computer, letting it load up and then properly ejecting it. You can then take it back into the other computer and it will work. This is a problem if you are limited to accessing only the one computer that is showing the error.

Error Code 43 is a Device Manager error that means the following:
Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)
When you get this error with USB devices it’s because one of the drivers controlling the device notified the operating system that the device failed in some manner. This can be because of corruption in one of the loaded drivers and the driver cache just needs to be flushed. Unplugging the computer sometimes doesn’t resolve the problem because the battery still holds power. To fix this, unplug all of your USB devices, then turn off the PC and take out the battery (This is assuming that you’re on a laptop), let the PC set for about 5 minutes, then put the battery back in and restart the PC. Next, plug your USB devices back in one at a time and make sure that they work.

I do not think anyone really knows how to fix this elusive error. Most likely its some sort of vendor issue but each side points to each other. My 4GB Seagate USB 3.0 external does this on two separate USB controllers, one an expensive MSI laptop ad one an Asus Z77 4 model ASRocks MB. Both produce the same problem and Seagate is now shipping a 3rd NEW drive - destined to be as DOA as the 1st two, totally stumped the band and it looks like this long post as well. If anyone ever figures this out I would post what REALLY works. The power down, re-insert cr@p is just lame. The utility scams are just as weak.
Someone knows and just is not talking. The internet is full of this indeterminate error. Its probably something totally different - it just fails to figure out the real code and shows a 43.
If I ever fix this I will post. I have also had the same problem on a USB 64GB stick. Works fine elsewhere. Sometimes just needs USB 2.0 on an older Win7 machine. Mine is Server 2012 or Win 8 Pro. Occasionally it will also show a code 39. 'Unable to load the device driver..' as a SCSI (UAS Port_#0005.Hub_#003 location.

btw; a Fix-it is here, seems to think it can settle the 39 error ok, but 43 comes back again. Just a wasted article really, but here for you to repeat & rinse...

Interestingly enough, I kept running the fixit above each time failing until it started up! I ran the disk's Seagate Dashboard Dashboard 2.0 installer, got a compatibility popup - made a shortcut to run as 7 admin, and ran again. got this error. So far drive is up. I will reboot and see if it stays. (Server 2012 x64)
I think I can blame Seagate now. After the reboot, it came back broken 39 again.
I also noticed this 4tb drive is nowhere on Windows 8 compatibility listing - but there are a lot of other USB drives on it, none at 4tb. I forgot to say earlier I have 4 3tb USB 3.0 Seagate externals on a Rosewill USB 3.0 hub to my Win8 Laptop's 3.0 port, all powered and running as a disk pool on Windows 8, so something used to work....
Now I am looking for Seagate troubleshooter or a newer Dashboard version..
