Error Code 0x80041004

Today I started getting network error code 0x80041004 while trying to play internet checkers. What is this error code and how do I fix it?

Problem solved. Yeay, I can now play Internet backgammon after days of torture. I use Win 7. Clear the SSL State by following these steps.

a. Press the Windows Key and the R key simultaneously to get the Run prompt.

b. In the Run prompt, type inetcpl.cpl and press enter.

c. In the Internet Properties window, click on the Content tab.

d. Click on Clear SSL State.

I appreciate your suggestion - which may be helpful in a corrupted SSL state.

But in the current case, error 0x80041004 was just a simple game server connection issue. I was notified this morning about the posts given above. My short test on a Windows 7 production machine shows, that MS Internet games are working again - whitout any further interaction - a kind of voodoo. Or some Microsoft supporter hit the reset button on a game server ;-) - cheers.

    This fixed the problem yesterday, but some people think it was a coincidence like other 'fixes' recommended in the past.  This morning I had the same problem with the same error. I cleared the SSL State again........ and I was able to play an Internet game again. Is it still a coincidence? I will re-post if it happens again.

    OK, this same error occurred several times today. I cleared the SSL State but it does not seem to accomplish much. Most of the time I have been able to start a game but it gets dropped in the middle of the game with the same error code. I am now convinced it is just a coincidence that clearing the SSL State made it work. If it is the problem, it is just part of the problem, not all of the problem. However, from experience I can tell you that Microsoft will not spend their time trying to solve it.

    AFAIK support for internet games has been discontinued (see and  Windows 7 MS Internet games fails with error 0x80041004) 

    I don't think this is the problem. My games stopped working for about a week. Then I cleared the SSL State as recommended in a post to this problem. It worked. The games stopped working the next day and I cleared the SSL State again. The games started working again. If it happens again and clearing the SSL State makes it work again I will repost a reply and I think I will consider it a solution and not a coincidence.
