I bought my Gateway laptop in January. Randomly last night it said "Plugged in, not charging" on the battery meter. I know this is NOT an issue with Gateway because I have googled this issue and the common problems seems to be Vista. I tried following these four steps that some have claimed work
1.
Click Start and type device in the search field, then select Device Manager .
2.
Expand the Batteries category.
3.
Under the Batteries category, right-click the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery listing, and select Uninstall .
WARNING: Do not remove the Microsoft AC Adapter driver or any other ACPI compliant driver.
4.
On the Device Manager taskbar, click Scan for hardware changes .
Alternately, select Action > Scan for hardware changes .
Windows will scan your computer for hardware that doesn't have drivers installed, and will install the drivers needed to manage your battery's power. The notebook should now indicate that the battery is charging."
but I didn't have much luck with that at all. I really need someone to tell me how to fix this problem because the fact that this has clearly been a big issue for Vista users everywhere over the past 2 or so years is completely unacceptable and honestly I'm getting really annoyed with the issue. So please help me with this Vista problem and I know for a fact its not a problem with Gateway because it's a practically new computer.

Here is what I've done and it worked for me:
first 2 steps as you have written
step 3: instead of uninstall, I've selected disable. I've waited for 2-3 minutes and enabled is again.
Once I've enabled, it started to charge.
I can't guarantee it will work for everyone, but it worked for me. Give a try and let me know if it worked.
Thanks you Leakey for posting this! It's not the battery or motherboard! I have had the same annoying issue with my Gateway Vista 32 bit for a year and a half when it was six months old! I too sent mine in to be repaired and they have given me two battery replacements since! This last battery is almost a year old and I have just put up with it... Mine is now charging 100%!! Just go onto the Gateway site and search downloads for your computer... it says 'to fix plugged in not charging issues'... a bios fix like you said. Make sure you have the computer plugged in first. It was the first download available. Are you sure there is no fix for your 64 bit?
Yeah been enabling/disabling, n m getting tired of it.Nwaiz i have found a solution but it does fit on my computer...lol. I researched and finally found the problem is actually BIOS related. The reason i say that is because i have a gateway computer and when the research landed me on their website:http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/getFile.asp?id=24426&uid=280878466. I realized tht it is a BIOS problem. Am running win 7 (64 bit) and i didnt find anything related to it :(, but at least i rest my case that it aint my battery.
Try unpluggin the AC, leave the battery in, and see how long the computer lasts before the battery gives out. That was my proof that the problem wasn't the battery cause it lasted 2 hours. I wish I could help you get yours working. So you've been disabling/enabling the microsoft ACPI thing too? with still not results?
Pandaundercover, I want to begin by appreciating you so much in finding time to reply to my post. Thank you. Now in getting back to the problem, i would say that i tried using your method( one you posted) and actually gained 4% for the 2 times i did do it. I rose from 76% to 78% and then from 78% to 80%. Now assuming that i had continue doing this i would have probably ended up with 100%( i highly doubt it). My problem is, when it says plugged in, not charging, my gateway computer battery light goes red and when you unplug the ac adapter the battery meter show me i have 0% of battery remaining but it does not shut down. And after i leave it on for a while and plug back the ac adapter, it says 0% available, plugged in, not charging. I unplug the ac adapter again, and same thing happens as earlier. It cannot be the battery, that one am sure. Still researching though..am closer to it. I can feel it
