I bought my Gateway laptop in January. Randomly last night it said "Plugged in, not charging" on the battery meter. I know this is NOT an issue with Gateway because I have googled this issue and the common problems seems to be Vista. I tried following these four steps that some have claimed work
1.
Click Start and type device in the search field, then select Device Manager .
2.
Expand the Batteries category.
3.
Under the Batteries category, right-click the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery listing, and select Uninstall .
WARNING: Do not remove the Microsoft AC Adapter driver or any other ACPI compliant driver.
4.
On the Device Manager taskbar, click Scan for hardware changes .
Alternately, select Action > Scan for hardware changes .
Windows will scan your computer for hardware that doesn't have drivers installed, and will install the drivers needed to manage your battery's power. The notebook should now indicate that the battery is charging."
but I didn't have much luck with that at all. I really need someone to tell me how to fix this problem because the fact that this has clearly been a big issue for Vista users everywhere over the past 2 or so years is completely unacceptable and honestly I'm getting really annoyed with the issue. So please help me with this Vista problem and I know for a fact its not a problem with Gateway because it's a practically new computer.

Here is what I've done and it worked for me:
first 2 steps as you have written
step 3: instead of uninstall, I've selected disable. I've waited for 2-3 minutes and enabled is again.
Once I've enabled, it started to charge.
I can't guarantee it will work for everyone, but it worked for me. Give a try and let me know if it worked.
I have had this Problem on many hp's that have come into my shop and 98% of them are fixed by just replacing the power jack and harness. out a 5 min job and costs about 15 bucks to obtain. easy way to tell is if you mouse over the power meter at the bottom repeatedly and it says charging some times and not charging others you have a bad jack. what most people dont realize is in most cases the magic fixes are not whats really fixing it its the wiggling of the cord thats caused by the process of the magic fix that actually fixed the problem.
I have a Gateway NV58. I had this issue five or six months ago. I could not resolve it, so I purchased a new battery and everything has been fine.
This morning I had the issue again "battery plugged in but not charging" I went to the Gateway site, downloaded the bios update and ran it.
The battery is now currently charging. 2% to 32% and still charging. Fingers crossed. Wish I could remember where I put that other battery I thought was dead.
Sorry, but your assessment that this is a Vista issue is incorrect. It is a hardware issue. Either the adapter is faulty or the charger component on the motherboard is not working. In most cases, the problem is with the motherboard. The fact that the computer is new is irrelevant; in fact, if hardware is going to fail it will usually do so quite quickly or go for years. Contact Gateway tech support for repair/replacement.

He's partially correct. This is a Vista/windows 7 issue in some cases. In others, it is a generic battery or generic charger, in others it is a failing charge circuit due to a bad battery induced overheating cycle. In others it is a worn out charger again from a bad battery sucking more amps than the spec allows. Usually it's a combination of these items. With so many issues that can cause this problem, It's hard to narrow it down. FYI Always pull your laptop battery if your not using it mobile for a while, and do so when the battery is 100% it will last longer when the chemistry is correct and retain shelf life. at the same time you will save your laptop from quite a bit of excess heat running a large amount of power through the motherboard charging circuit. Once the battery creates a short, it will pull excess power from the adapter through the motherboard. which can kill your motherboard, your hard drive (due to heat and low power feed), and your ac cord possibly breaking the ac port by melting the traces on it (seen quite a few blown like a fuse and having a torched "blue" look to it.
I have a 1 year old Fujitsu lifebook T5010. The charging circuit is fine.
I just installed Windows 7 on it (I have 27 of these laptops this is part of my job) previously they had Windows xp Professional installed. I recently replaced the battery with a new extended capacity battery. The original battery was lasting about half as long as it should. So with new battery now it charges to 94% then stalls and gives said message: "94% available (plugged in, not charging)" another thing to keep in mind some of the lithium-ion (90% of laptop batteries are lithium-ion) have a charge circuit built onto the battery. if you have purchased a non-oem battery you may have this problem try discharging battery fully then shut it down plug it in and let it charge overnight.
I have a Gateway MD78 series laptop. I have upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. I have purchased a new battery and a new AC adapter. I have performed all suggested solutions for the battery not charging issue and nothing has worked. People have been dealing with this issue for months and months. SOMEONE has to have a fix for this!??
