Error 2738 could not access VBScript run time for custom action.

I'm attempting to activate my Virgin Mobile Broadband2Go device on my Acer Aspire 1410 running 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium.  The installation aborts mid-way through with Error 2738 -- could not access VBScript run time for custom action.  I was able to successfully install on my wife's HP with the same OS, so the problem is not with the Broadband2Go device.  Command "regsvr32 vbscript.dll" did not fix the problem.

Microsoft has created a Fix-It for this!

What this Fix it does is to remove incorrect or corrupt registry entries that interfere with VB support in windows and then re-registers the DLL ensuring that the correct registry setting are there. After running the Fix it solution you may be able to immediately  try the operation that previously gave you the error, but to be sure, a reboot is suggested. This will address similar issues with other programs as well and not just the applications that are specifically mentioned in this thread.

The link to the Fix it is: http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9804433

Thanks!

I solved the problem by running the McAfee removal and cleanup utility downloaded from their website. It set the registry key back correct and probably fixed other future problems.

Download the removal tool from: http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

Thank you VERY MUCH for this link. I got a brand new computer (Win7, 64bit) and it came pre-loaded with McAfee Security Suite which I absolutely did not want (based on many undesireable encounters and experiences with McAfee products).

One of the first things I did after running Windows Update and getting all of my drivers and Operating System up to date, was un-install McAfee.

First I looked in the McAfee program folder in my Programs Menu to see if they had an uninstall icon, and of course it did not.

So, I un-installed McAfee from the Windows 7 Control Panel. This appeared to be successful - it said the uninstall was complete and I was prompted to re-boot.

Upon rebooting the system after un-installing McAfee I discovered several problems such as:

    • "Can't find script engine VBScript for script ..." when trying to use the WER (Windows Error Reporting) feature from the Windows Event Log
    • "Unable to remove / do not have permission" to un-install other programs from the Windows Control Panel
    • Tons of Error Entries in the Windows Event Log Viewer like:

"  The McShield scanning service cannot find any configuration in the registry "

" AddWin32ServiceFiles Unable to Back Up image of service McAfee Firewall Core Service "

" AddLegacyDriverFiles unable to back up image of binary McAfee NDIS Light filter "

    etc....

So obviously un-installing McAfee even from a brand new Windows 7 system directly from the Control Panel does not truly remove McAfee (I've had easier times cleaning up and removing viruses and other infections from friend's computers than I had trying to remove McAfee! Ridiculous!)

In the end, the link you provided to the McAfee cleaner (which for some reason didn't come up in various Google / Bing searches until I finally found this thread) ultimately did the trick and fixed the issues.

    Many thanks!

Thank you soooooooooooooooooo much!   I have been fighting with this now for several months!  I have the paid version of Incredimail and even the techs there have no clue as to how to fix it!   They did suggest registering the dll etc, but that did not work!

They do now though as I just shared this page with them and the fix!  I Downloaded the Mcafee cleaner and ran it and within seconds, I restarted, and IM 2 installed sweet a pie!

Thank you , thank you !

You are absoloutely right. I am working with Dell Tech support. I personally came across number of cases where we faced this issue. We tried everything but this issue was not getting fixed. So ultimately after running Mcafee uninstaller and restarting the system issue got fixed.

The main reason was that most of the dell systems they go with Mcafee software preinstalled. If anybody uninstall the Mcafee and install any other software then he or she would experience the same issue while installing one or another software.

By running the mcafee utility we can uninstall the remaining Mcafee files and can easily fix the issue. So ultimately i can say that this is the best fix for the Dell or any other system which was prev running with Mcafee.
