Error 2738 could not access VBScript run time for custom action.

I'm attempting to activate my Virgin Mobile Broadband2Go device on my Acer Aspire 1410 running 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium.  The installation aborts mid-way through with Error 2738 -- could not access VBScript run time for custom action.  I was able to successfully install on my wife's HP with the same OS, so the problem is not with the Broadband2Go device.  Command "regsvr32 vbscript.dll" did not fix the problem.

Microsoft has created a Fix-It for this!  

What this Fix it does is to remove incorrect or corrupt registry entries that interfere with VB support in windows and then re-registers the DLL ensuring that the correct registry setting are there. After running the Fix it solution you may be able to immediately  try the operation that previously gave you the error, but to be sure, a reboot is suggested. This will address similar issues with other programs as well and not just the applications that are specifically mentioned in this thread.

    I also could not uninstall my Blackberry software (in order to solve another problem).  I read "a thousand" threads to try to resolve the 2738 error but to no avail (including reregistering VBScript, etc. etc.). 

    I came back to this thread and noted the success people were having by cleaning the already removed McAfee ap.  As far as I know I have never had McAfee on my laptop. I also searched for the ap on my laptop and any programs with that name - nothing. In desperation I downloaded and ran the McAfee cleaner anyway (per link earlier in this thread). Lo and behold it removed numerous items as it ran!  I was astounded. It also solved my 2738 error message. I can now uninstall my Blackberry aps. In addition it also fixed my calendar gadget which a few months ago turned into the dreaded solid orange. It now works correctly too.
