Error 2738 could not access VBScript run time for custom action.

I'm attempting to activate my Virgin Mobile Broadband2Go device on my Acer Aspire 1410 running 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium.  The installation aborts mid-way through with Error 2738 -- could not access VBScript run time for custom action.  I was able to successfully install on my wife's HP with the same OS, so the problem is not with the Broadband2Go device.  Command "regsvr32 vbscript.dll" did not fix the problem.

Microsoft has created a Fix-It for this!  

What this Fix it does is to remove incorrect or corrupt registry entries that interfere with VB support in windows and then re-registers the DLL ensuring that the correct registry setting are there. After running the Fix it solution you may be able to immediately  try the operation that previously gave you the error, but to be sure, a reboot is suggested. This will address similar issues with other programs as well and not just the applications that are specifically mentioned in this thread.

    I can confirm bob4432's solution works.

    I'm happy to report that it also fixes a nasty other problem I had on another computer with the installation of the Cisco VPN x64 client (package vpnclient-winx64-msi-5.0.07.0290-k9.exe) which gave 'installation prematurely aborted'. Whatever the logging details, that installation didn't give any hints where to look for and amongst many other suggestions on internet forums I reminded the infamous vbscript term so when I found this, I tried it and it worked!

    I'm still wondering how it can be that this error happens on my and all my colleague's laptops as well as our server (all W7x64, Kaspersky AV).

    By the way, for another reason (only) my computer's W7 was 'refreshed' from the install CD short before trying this cisco client for the first time - assuming the system was in a relatively fresh state, an over-install apparently doesn't solve the problem.

    I have a 2010 Alienware laptop, Pre loaded with McLousy, I used control panel to remove it right away, like open box, set it up, delete Mclousy, haha.  Anyhow Alex-Seattle, Thank You for your post!  I was trying to install my new verizon mifi device and was getting the 2738 code.  Your solution fixed the problem.

    running win7 ult 64bit and in the registry the entry HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID{B54F3741-5B07-11cf-A4B0-00AA004A55E8}\InprocServer32 is pointing to C:\Windows\system32\vbscript.dll .

    should it point to C:\Windows\syswow64\vbscript.dll ?

    there is a vbscript.dll in both locations but are different sizes...and i have run the SFC /scannow command and it resulted in all good.  never had any mcafee software installed on this machine but ran the remove tool anyway just in case.

    trying to install a new version of a 3g modem - old one still works but cant uninstall it or install the new one because of the 2738 error...

    please assist...
