Error 2738 could not access VBScript run time for custom action.

I'm attempting to activate my Virgin Mobile Broadband2Go device on my Acer Aspire 1410 running 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium.  The installation aborts mid-way through with Error 2738 -- could not access VBScript run time for custom action.  I was able to successfully install on my wife's HP with the same OS, so the problem is not with the Broadband2Go device.  Command "regsvr32 vbscript.dll" did not fix the problem.

Microsoft has created a Fix-It for this!  

What this Fix it does is to remove incorrect or corrupt registry entries that interfere with VB support in windows and then re-registers the DLL ensuring that the correct registry setting are there. After running the Fix it solution you may be able to immediately  try the operation that previously gave you the error, but to be sure, a reboot is suggested. This will address similar issues with other programs as well and not just the applications that are specifically mentioned in this thread.

    I had same experience as Snow Cat.  Bought a Samsung netbook in china and it wouldn't take vodaphone or telecom in  NZ.  Installation of both modems gave error 2738 message with both modems which both worked on another computer.  I thought it was a Chinese thing but Samsung said it was microsoft and modems companies said it was Microsoft script problem.  Like SnowCat I tried to completely uninstall McAfee, but after reading thread here , especially SnowCat, I knew this was problem and sure enough...

    Download the removal tool from: http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

    I now am able to get online.

    I similarly wasnt able to delete/ modify the key.

    Details as follows:

    If you are using 64-bit version of Windows:

    • Run Command Prompt as administrator:
      • Start Menu -> All Programs -> Accessories
      • Right click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator
    • Type the following command in the prompt: reg delete "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Classes\Wow6432Node\CLSID{B54F3741-5B07-11CF-A4B0-00AA004A55E8}" /f , then hit Enter.
    • Next, you must also type the following command: c:\windows\syswow64\regsvr32 vbscript.dll , then hit Enter

    Thank you ed08724, the mcafee removal tool worked for me where other suggestions to do with dll files didn't. Handy to know for the future!
