Why isn't ed08724's answer marked as the solution instead of the lame "reload Windows" answer??
It is obvious that ed08724 posted the solution that is working for us all - using the McAfee cleaner utility he linked to.
This issue is mainly happening to users who just bought a Dell (or other big brand) system that came pre-loaded with McCrappy because McAfee doesn't even have a MS compliant un-install that works properly. Obviously McAfee cannot be simply un-installed
like any other normal program (shame on them!) and requires the McAfee cleaner software link thated08724 provided.
We can see that the real solution that is working for most people in this topic ised08724's suggestion to user the McAfee cleaner utility and that most of us have Proposed his post as the REAL solution, so why does this thread still
have Marilyn's suggestion to re-install Windows as the solution??
Moderators - PLEASE update this and mark the real solution. It's quite clear that it is McAfee's stubborn embedded installation that is causing most people to encounter this problem.
On a side-note:
When ordering a new system from a big manufacturer (such as Dell) call them when you place the order and request that your new system be shipped WITHOUT McAfee pre-installed. That's what I did on one of my systems and it totally avoided this problem (but delayed
shipment), and the only reason I had to resort to this is because my system arrived with other problems and so Dell sent me a new drive, but they included the pre-installed McAfee on the new drive and that cost me considerable time and frustration until I
found ed08724's answer here. Even the Dell techs themselves that I dealt with on the phone didn't realize this was a McAfee issue until I pointed this out to them (and most of them still don't know, except maybe the one who posted in this thread and
the one I showed this solution to).
I don't know which is more sad - the fact that McAfee is harder to remove from your system than a virus, or the fact that this thread has been allowed to continue with "Re-Install Windows" as the solution.
