Go to C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\ ,delete all Font*.dat and reboot it.

PresentationFontCache.exe uses 50%+ of my CPU and therefore my 64 bit Windows 7 system runs even slower than it did with Vista. Is there a fix other than killing it every time I boot up?

Hi,
the service PresentationFontCache.exe is only usefull if you use WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) applications. If not, start services.msc and disable the service.

2016-01-06T01:37:22+00:00 PFC has been running constantly for the last three months straight. I have checked it once every hour for 8 hours a day. It seems every time any of my applications or windows gets an update a rebuild is required. It seems to take about 72 hours of runtime to rebuild the cache on a quad core i5 3230. It then shuts down until my next update (usually with in 24 hours I get some type of update to something and it fires off again. Over the last 30 days when I have checked it at all ours of day and night at least 8 times a day it has been running for 96% of those checks and average 30% of my CPU!. This is ridiculous. Unfortunately I have mostly WPF applications running so need to have this process running. If I just wipe out the fonts as is suggested within an hour the WPF is running again to regenerate them. I am at the point that I will have to upgrade to a i7 6000 series with eight cores and 15K RPM drves to get enough processing power for my apps and the font cache to run at an acceptable performance level. $2000 for the upgrade. Essentially I am adding in 30% more processing power for the font cache to run.

note - Most users will have to navigate to the folder using windows explorer (vs using run command) to avoid getting a permissions error
