Hello,

The print spooler stops after trying to print a PDF file and it will not restart. The only way I have been able to print again is to do a System Recovery. When I try to print a PDF file again the print spooler does the same thing.

Any help is appreciated.

· What happens when you try to restart print spooler when it stops? How are you trying to restart the print spooler service? Do you get any error message or any error code?

Try the steps below and check if it helps:

Step 1:

When the print spooler service stops, try restarting it and check if it helps. If you have already tried the steps then ignore Step 1.

a. Click Start and then type "services" (without quotes) in the Start Search box.

b. In the results area, right-click services, and then click “Run as administrator”.

You will be prompted to type the password for an administrator account. Click Continue if you are the administrator or type the administrator password. Then, click Continue.

c. In Services Window locate the service “Print Spooler” and double click on it.

d. Make sure that the Startup type is set to “Automatic” and the Service status is “Started”.

Step 2:

Try running the printer troubleshooter and check if it helps.

Open the Printer troubleshooter

Step 3:

Try the following Microsoft Fixit and check if it helps.

Fix printing problems by resetting the print spooler (Applicable to Windows 7)

I would suggest you to rebuild print spooler service and check if it helps. Please follow these steps:

a. Press Windows + R keys, type notepad in run window and press Enter.

c. Save the file as .reg file on the desktop.

d. Right click .reg file and select run as administrator.

e. Click yes, when message prompts.

How to Fix Print Spooler problems
1. Go to
c:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS from the start menu

2.

Delete all files listed there

3.

Then from the start menu type in SERVICES. Right click services and run as administrator.

4.

Find Print Spooler in the list and make sure the spooler is started

Dear Guys,

If you experience any printing problems with HP printers, simply download HP Print Scan Doctor from HP.com and run the application. It can automatically resolve these issues..

I have the same issue with a few of my users on Win 7 64bit machines. I found if i go to c:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS and delete the files in there I can restart the print spooler and will work. It only happens when printing certain .PDF files, ones that were scanned using the Xerox network printers we have. The other odd thing I found and can't figure out, the files in the PRINTERS directory are .swf files (Shockwave Flash). I don't know where the .swf file are coming from, as our Xerox doc center creates a .PDF file and I don't see anything in the config on it to do anything with shockwave. The problem .PDF files will print if they are sent to any of the network printers (Xerox and HP's), it only stops the print spooler when printing to the local printer (HP 1020's have been the problem so far).

Bingo -- my wife prints a work PDF from a Xerox doc center scanner on her home computer with an HP 1018 printer, and it kills the spooler EVERY time. I added a batch file to her desktop to clear the spool folder (has to run as admin).

To print it, we save the PDF as JPEG and print that.
