Hello,

The print spooler stops after trying to print a PDF file and it will not restart.  The only way I have been able to print again is to do a System Recovery.  When I try to print a PDF file again the print spooler does the same thing.

Any help is appreciated.

·        What happens when you try to restart print spooler when it stops? How are you trying to restart the print spooler service? Do you get any error message or any error code?

Try the steps below and check if it helps:

Step 1:

When the print spooler service stops, try restarting it and check if it helps. If you have already tried the steps then ignore Step 1.

a. Click Start and then type "services" (without quotes) in the Start Search box.

b. In the results area, right-click services, and then click “Run as administrator”.

You will be prompted to type the password for an administrator account. Click Continue if you are the administrator or type the administrator password. Then, click Continue.

c. In Services Window locate the service “Print Spooler” and double click on it.

d. Make sure that the Startup type is set to “Automatic” and the Service status is “Started”.

Step 2:

Try running the printer troubleshooter and check if it helps.

Open the Printer troubleshooter

Step 3:

Try the following Microsoft Fixit and check if it helps.

Fix printing problems by resetting the print spooler (Applicable to Windows 7)

I would suggest you to rebuild print spooler service and check if it helps. Please follow these steps:

a. Press Windows + R keys, type notepad in run window and press Enter.

b. In notepad, copy and paste the following:

c. Save the file as .reg file on the desktop.

d. Right click .reg file and select run as administrator.

e. Click yes, when message prompts.

    I've tried that fix and it didn't work for me with my laserjet 1020.  I have narrowed it down to only pdf's created by scanning a document from  xerox workcenters (various models) crashing the spooler so I'm going to try harrassing xerox about this.

    Hi I am posting this because it resolved my problem with XP 32 bit spooler and HP LJ1022.

    The source of the problem was the driver in this case and boy does this sound similar to what you guys are getting.

     Do you have a HP LaserJet 10-1022 printers and everytime someone prints a PDF file it kills the print spooler?

     The SDhp1020.dll was build by 2 different companies, Zenographics Inc, and by Marvell Semiconductor. The Marvell version of the drivers crash when printing some PDF  files. Of course the Marvell version is also the current / latest version so your likely to get this driver if you download from HP web site.

    So here is how to fix the HP LJ 1020 Spooler susbsystem error.

    Download the HP Driver files here ->  HP-LJ1020-fix

    Extract the files then the files need to be copied into: C:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\w32×86\3

    Zip includes:

    SDhp1020.DLL ->  as part of the original driver package

    SDDM32.DLL -> Zenographics Inc  (original)

    ZTAG32.DLL ->  Zenographics Inc  (original)

    ZGDI32.DLL ->  Zenographics Inc  (original)

    The zip also has the rest of the HP driver package in it. You do not need to copy the entire driver folder, just SDhp1020.DLL. But if you want the entire package it is supplied  as well.

    I had the same problem with one specific PDF file that was generated by scanning a hard copy document.  Each time I tried to print the file to an HP 1022nw using USB I would get the first of 4 pages and then the printer queue would get stuck and the printer spooler would stop.

    After a frustrating 90 minutes I found this thread.   I then used Acrobat X to print a new PDF from the old PDF, and the new PDF prints just fine.

    This seems to confirm that the issue is the PDF, not the reader that is being used.
