Unable to print on Xerox Phaser 6180MFP "Print driver host for 32 bit applications has stopped working" Windows 7

**Original Title**Upgraded to Windows 7 and installed print driver, now when I try to print, I get this message: 'Print driver host for 32 bit applications has stopped working'

I just upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7(64 bit) and have a Xerox Phaser 6180MFP.  I downloaded the 64 bit driver and installed it.  The test page printed out just fine during installation.  Now I'm trying to print from Word 2003 and from Internet Explorer 8 and all I get is a message that 'print driver host for 32bit applications has stopped working'.  The system cannot solve the problem and I can't find anything helpful on the microsoft support site.

Can anyone help?

Thanks.

Most likely the Lexmark driver is corrupting the memory of the splwow64.exe process.  Launch the 64bit version of IE rather than the 32bit version.  The splwow64 process is only used by 32bit applications.

I'm back!

My apologies for the troubles people have been encountering when contacting support for help with this issue. My original posting should have included additional information regarding how to receive support when calling from outside North America.

To find the correct contact information for your country, go to Xerox.com and check to make sure the country setting in the top right corner reflects your country. Then, click on the Contact Us link. You will see a list of phone numbers under the Customer Service heading. I have included an example of what you would see for the UK. When you call the Welcome Center for technical assistance, please request to be directed to 2nd level support. Our 2nd level support representatives can access the beta drivers you need to fix this problem. We expect to have the drivers available publicly on Xerox.com soon. In the meantime, this route should get you the assistance you need.

Here's a quick summary of the suggestions given in the thread:

    K. Korsky:

We, at Xerox, would like to help you resolve this problem. Please contact Xerox customer support for more assistance in troubleshooting this problem.

Here is the contact information: 1-800-821-2797 (USA) or TTY 1-800-855-2880.

In this case, it is best to remove the old driver before installing (upgrading to) the new driver. We do have detailed instructions on Xerox.com for removing drivers in Windows 7 at the Xerox support site: http://www.support.xerox.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE?St=103,E=0000000001998213653,K=7624,Sxi=7,solution=ref%28Remove_Driver_Win7%29http://www.support.xerox.com/go/go.asp?ksessID={936ABCFC-6784-4E5E-9BE9-9E32175247C2}&Xlang=en_US&Xcntry=USA&prodID=6180&objID=8020

Solution Remove or Uninstall a Print Driver (Printer) From a Microsoft Windows 7 OS

CAUTION: All pending print jobs in the printer’s print queue need to be canceled before the print queue is removed; otherwise, the computer will need to be restarted so that the print queue is visible again and the print jobs can be deleted.

NOTE: If the printer is connected to the computer using a USB cable, unplug the USB cable from the printer only.  Leave the other end of the cable plugged into the computer.

To delete any existing print jobs in the printer’s print queue:

    1. Open the Control Panel. (Click on the [Start] button, and then click on [Control Panel].)
    2. Depending on the "View By" option, perform one of the following options:
      • Click on [View Devices and Printers] under the Hardware and Sound category.
      • Double-click on [Devices and Printers] (if viewing by icons).
    3. Double-click on the printer icon to open the print queue window so see what's printing.
    4. In the print queue window, click on the [Printer] menu, and then click on [Cancel All Documents]. An "Are you sure you want to cancel all documents" message will be displayed.
    5. Click on [Yes].

To remove only one print queue out of many that have been grouped together:

    3. Right-click on the printer icon or icon group, select [Delete print queue], and then click on the print queue that needs to be removed.
    4. A pop-up window with an "Are you sure you want to delete the printer?" will be displayed. Click on [Yes] to delete the print queue.
    5. Restart the computer.

To remove the print queue or all print queues grouped together:

    3. Right-click on the printer, and then select [Remove Device].
    4. A pop-up window with an "Are you sure you want to remove this device?" message will be displayed. Click on [Yes] to delete the printer or printer group.
    5. Restart the computer.

OK, I identified it on my 6130, I don't know if it can be solved with other printers with equal ease or not. I my case, the job control part of the driver seems to cause the trouble. The solution is to either turn on Job Control or High speed printing (this latter disables some job control features that I don't need, anyway) in Printer Properties > Configuration to make it work flawlessly from the previously misbehaving applications.

In my particular case, I experienced several other problems, including absolutely no way to print to it as a network printer. The final solution that took me half a day of experimentation to figure out was to make sure every trace of Xerox' own driver (downloaded from their website) was completely removed and to allow Win7/64 to install its own bundled printer driver. Everything returned to normal, all applications print and the printer is part of the LAN now.

i think i have found a solution for mine (after countless hours at it)

essentially, i've been getting the same symptoms under the same conditions with the same error message.

i have a dell 3115cn laser printer, there were 2 printer driver names, one with 3115cn PS and one with 3115cn PCL6, tbh i dont know the difference, but when i tried installing the latter one (PCL6), it worked for me), this goes for microsoft office and i stopped getting that error message

I hope this helps everyone, i know how frustrating printer problems can be... :)

    AND3:

I had this "Print driver host for 32 bit applications has stopped working" problem with Windows 7 64-bit and the Xerox Phaser 6180MFP.  I cleared the print queue, deleted the printer as sugggested by K. Kosrky, and re-installed the printer using the latest 64-bit printer drivers downloaded from Xerox.  I did this via Ethernet (with USB disabled, which seemed to keep loading the (older?) Windows 7 drivers automatically).  At any rate, I was still getting the error message.

After trying several other ideas, I disabled the print queue for this printer and have this PC print directly to the printer.  (Control Panel - Devices and Printers - Xerox 6180MFP - (right click) Printer Properties - Advanced - Print Directly to the Printer).   Worked like a charm.

Check out this article here I wrote on fixing this issue. It has nothing to do with your print drivers. I was having the same issue with QuickBooks and it has to do with Windows 7 sqlWOW64 not being able to spool with 32 bit applications.

    http://www.sevenforums.com/hardware-devices/130158-printing-32-bit-applications.html#post1122439

    AndersBen:

Thanks for the hint. Unfortunately, I'm unable to select the option to disable spooling; whenever I change this option and hit Apply or OK, I get an error message about Windows not being able to save the settings. I can change everything else without problems. A bit fishy, really.

However, after much experimenting I was able to solve the problem on my machine. It turned out that BitDefender Internet Security 2011 is the culprit: Disabling its "Active Virus Control" and IDS features (under Advanced Settings in Expert mode), or adding splwow64 to the exception list, allows printing from 32-bit programs.

I should add that this is with only the default updates installed, i.e. without SP1 beta and the legacy printing fix.

It might be worth your time looking over the thread in case I missed out on any other suggestions or tips that might help resolve your issue.  If none of the above helps, though, it is probably best for you to create your own thread.

Be sure to include all necessary information that will help with diagnosing your particular issue, including but not limited to: PC make & model, PC specifications, OS type, a description of what led to the problem you are facing, what steps you have taken in trying to resolve the issue, etc. .  The more specific and detailed you can be, the better it will help with providing you valuable suggestions for troubleshooting your conundrum.    ^_^

I am going ahead and locking this thread.  Thanks to all of those who helped out with their suggestions!
