blue screen and stop error 0x00000024 on startup windows XP

i am running a dell 4700 on windows XP. yesterday it shut down unexpectedly and now on starting up the loading screen appears but then i get a blue screen displaying stop: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x86FCE488, 0xc0000102, 0x00000000)

i have tried every start up mode in the F8 and F12 menus, but everything will take me back to this screen, it tells me to do disk deframentation, or check hard drive configuration, but i am clueless as to how to do this from this blue screen that every avenue leads to.

hopefully there is some way of rescuing my PC...

Hello lauriAM

You will need an XP Installation CD to try to fix this.  If you do not have one, try to borrow one just to run this fix.

Configure your PC to boot from CD if it isn't already set up that way. You may need to enter the BIOS to configure the PC to boot from the CD.

Set the boot order to

floppy (if present)

CD/DVDROM

Hard disk

SAVE and EXIT

Start your PC with the XP Setup CD in the drive. When you see the "Press any key to boot from CD..." prompt, do so and let the CD-based boot process begin.

When the Recovery Console option is offered (Press R to start the Recovery Console), do so. You may be asked which Windows installation to enter, in which case type the number of the Windows installation you wish to work on (usually 1).

When prompted, enter the Administrator's password for that Windows installation. If you did not set a password just press ENTER

At the command prompt, type

chkdsk /r (there is a space before the /)

Enter

    Hi lauriAM,  I am not sure how I did this, but my ckdsk was not working.

    I tried various things like running dos:  ckds/f but that didn't work.

    I long ago downloaded something called Advanced System Care.

    I likely downloaded from cnet.com or geek.com

    I ran the various features of ASC  It is blue with a big C.

    I'm not sure how it fixed it but ckdsk works fine now.

    I hope this helps.  I did not have a backup CD.

    My computer was a gift.

    ok this is whats going on, I am trying to fix a computer (DeskTop) for a friend, he says they went on vacation for 2 weeks and unplugged everything before they left, now his computer comes up with a blue screen as I mentioned above, Yes it is a Sata, My dell disc is around 10 years old, but I figured it would work to fix the problem, unfortuneately his computer will just run the begining and won't go any futher. I can't get to the repair part, only it asks for either "R" for repair and "Q" for quit, or just install, I have tried them all, it still gets stuck in the same place as I stated above, Then I recieved his disk but the only thing it will load is that dang symptom tree, and says everything is fine! I went through all of it, drivers and everything! Now what? How can I get to the repair part with either disc? Can someone plz help me here? I am at my wits end. Thanks in advance!

    OH I tried to load the drivers but it won't accept the disc from booting in f12, it says something like Sata 1 installed and so on and so forth, but won't go anywhere else.

    If you have a proper XP installation CD  (not just recovery CDs or driver CDs) you should be able to get to the recovery Console.

    Do you have the boot order set to CD drive before hard drive.

    Then reboot with the CD in the drive
