i am running a dell 4700 on windows XP. yesterday it shut down unexpectedly and now on starting up the loading screen appears but then i get a blue screen displaying stop: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x86FCE488, 0xc0000102, 0x00000000)

i have tried every start up mode in the F8 and F12 menus, but everything will take me back to this screen, it tells me to do disk deframentation, or check hard drive configuration, but i am clueless as to how to do this from this blue screen that every avenue leads to.

hopefully there is some way of rescuing my PC...

Hello lauriAM

You will need an XP Installation CD to try to fix this.  If you do not have one, try to borrow one just to run this fix.

Configure your PC to boot from CD if it isn't already set up that way. You may need to enter the BIOS to configure the PC to boot from the CD.

Set the boot order to

floppy (if present)

CD/DVDROM

Hard disk

SAVE and EXIT

Start your PC with the XP Setup CD in the drive. When you see the "Press any key to boot from CD..." prompt, do so and let the CD-based boot process begin.

When the Recovery Console option is offered (Press R to start the Recovery Console), do so. You may be asked which Windows installation to enter, in which case type the number of the Windows installation you wish to work on (usually 1).

When prompted, enter the Administrator's password for that Windows installation. If you did not set a password just press ENTER

At the command prompt, type

chkdsk /r (there is a space before the /)

Enter

    Hi cybertek,

I would like to use the same solution as lauriAM but I cannot give the Administrators password.

    1. I did not set one but tried a couple of things including just hitting enter.
    2. I booted to 'setup' and assigned a password. But when I go back to the prompt, that didn't work either.

Strangely the 1st time I got to the command line it did not ask me for a password. At that point I tried to run chkdsk /f (as suggested in BSOD) but it was not valid so I ran chkdsk with no options.   later I discovered I should have run chksk /r  but I can't because now it wants a password.

    Help!

    That`s not so good.

Have you rebooted and tried the Recovery Console several times?

This is some sort of corruption of the hard drive or the file system.

What to do next depends on if you need to rescue files, or can you just reinstall.

If you need to rescue files you could either slave the drive in another machine or create a bootable Rescue disk such as Bart PE.  Then you could run chkdsk /r

    Create a BartPE bootable CD
