blue screen and stop error 0x00000024 on startup windows XP

i am running a dell 4700 on windows XP. yesterday it shut down unexpectedly and now on starting up the loading screen appears but then i get a blue screen displaying stop: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x86FCE488, 0xc0000102, 0x00000000)

i have tried every start up mode in the F8 and F12 menus, but everything will take me back to this screen, it tells me to do disk deframentation, or check hard drive configuration, but i am clueless as to how to do this from this blue screen that every avenue leads to.

hopefully there is some way of rescuing my PC...

You will need an XP Installation CD to try to fix this.  If you do not have one, try to borrow one just to run this fix.

Configure your PC to boot from CD if it isn't already set up that way. You may need to enter the BIOS to configure the PC to boot from the CD.

Set the boot order to

floppy (if present)

CD/DVDROM

Hard disk

SAVE and EXIT

Start your PC with the XP Setup CD in the drive. When you see the "Press any key to boot from CD..." prompt, do so and let the CD-based boot process begin.

When the Recovery Console option is offered (Press R to start the Recovery Console), do so. You may be asked which Windows installation to enter, in which case type the number of the Windows installation you wish to work on (usually 1).

When prompted, enter the Administrator's password for that Windows installation. If you did not set a password just press ENTER

At the command prompt, type

chkdsk /r (there is a space before the /)

Enter

    i have windows xp dell inspiron 531s and i did do everything you said in the first question you answered and my dell keeps just rebooting and it tells the same two questions and i type 1 in them and i cant type a command no where also i cant log in

    I am not sure what you mean.

    If it is the case that when asked which Windows installation you type "1" and you do not get a command prompt, there might be a problem with the hard drive.

    Can you see the hard drive in the BIOS?

    Try running the Dell Diagnostics on the hard drive

    To access them press F12 when you see the dell logo screen, then there will be an option that says IDE or Hard Drive Diagnostics. That will run a quick test, if you want a more thorough test select the option that says Boot to Utility Partition, then select custom test, select hard drive and then run test.

    Thanks for your reply!

    The drive is recognized in BIOS as u said but when I try to reintall or repair the windows using the Windows XP Home CD, it drive doesnt get recognized over there. When I try to boot with the bootable command prompt CD, the hard drive is also not recognized there. 

    I just want to repair my windows so that I do not loose my data but I am not sure how to detect the hard drive during the windows installation process.

    Kindly, advise me the method so that I can retrieve my data.

    If the hard drive is not recognised to do a "Repair" all you can do is slave the drive in another machine to copy off all your files and data.

    Then reinstall XP

    But be aware that there might be a bigger problem with the hard drive

    Run diagnostics on the hard drive

    If you don't know the make of hard drive Hitachi Drive Fitness Test will work with any make.

    The Hitachi 3<sup>rd</sup> download is for a bootable CD

    These files need to be burned as an ISO file using a program like Imgburn

    Start ImgBurn. You will see the the main programme window and a log.

    In the main programme window >> click "Write image file to disc".

    New window: Make sure ImgBurn has found your CD/DVD burner (Destination).

    Then click the "Browse for a file" icon.

    Another window will open >> find and select the ISO image you want to burn >> click Open.

    Back at the main programme window. Click "Write".

    Then

    Configure your PC to boot from CD if it isn't already set up that way. You may need to enter the BIOS to configure the PC to boot from the CD.

    Set the boot order to

    floppy (if present)

    CD/DVDROM

    Hard disk

    SAVE and EXIT

    Put the CD in the drive and reboot. It should run then.
