blue screen and stop error 0x00000024 on startup windows XP

i am running a dell 4700 on windows XP. yesterday it shut down unexpectedly and now on starting up the loading screen appears but then i get a blue screen displaying stop: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x86FCE488, 0xc0000102, 0x00000000)

i have tried every start up mode in the F8 and F12 menus, but everything will take me back to this screen, it tells me to do disk deframentation, or check hard drive configuration, but i am clueless as to how to do this from this blue screen that every avenue leads to.

hopefully there is some way of rescuing my PC...

You will need an XP Installation CD to try to fix this. If you do not have one, try to borrow one just to run this fix.

Configure your PC to boot from CD if it isn't already set up that way. You may need to enter the BIOS to configure the PC to boot from the CD.

Set the boot order to

floppy (if present)

CD/DVDROM

Hard disk

SAVE and EXIT

Start your PC with the XP Setup CD in the drive. When you see the "Press any key to boot from CD..." prompt, do so and let the CD-based boot process begin.

When the Recovery Console option is offered (Press R to start the Recovery Console), do so. You may be asked which Windows installation to enter, in which case type the number of the Windows installation you wish to work on (usually 1).

When prompted, enter the Administrator's password for that Windows installation. If you did not set a password just press ENTER

At the command prompt, type

chkdsk /r (there is a space before the /)

You need to look at your documentation or here to find out the key combination to enter the BIOS.

Start pressing these keys whenever bootup begins

When in the BIOS look for the page with the boot order and set it to

Floppy (if present)

CD/DVDROM

Hard disk

SAVE and EXIT

Reboot with the installation CD in the drive

Please note that you cannot do this repair with a Restore CD. You need a full XP installation CD.

If it is indeed a Restore CD which you have, be careful. If it runs it will wipe the drive and you will lose all your data/files

I was able to boot from the cd by pressing f12 at the Dell logo and was able to set my boot from option to cd, after restarting the cd ran and I choose R for recoveryand then entered ckdsk/ r from at the cursour prompt. This promted my computer to check the disk for errors and it ckdsk for volumn, performed addition checking and recovery and completed. I turned off my computer at the power source button, turned it back on the computer automatically did a chkdsk, cleaned the dirty volumn and I was able to log onto windows again. This all started when we lost our power the other night. Thanks for your help. Oh, by the way; I'm sure glad I had kept my cds that arrived with my computer!

I have the same problem. I ran chkdsk /r and I still see the same screen. I have all my papers and essays on this computer so I really need it to work. What should I do?
