blue screen and stop error 0x00000024 on startup windows XP

i am running a dell 4700 on windows XP. yesterday it shut down unexpectedly and now on starting up the loading screen appears but then i get a blue screen displaying stop: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x86FCE488, 0xc0000102, 0x00000000)

i have tried every start up mode in the F8 and F12 menus, but everything will take me back to this screen, it tells me to do disk deframentation, or check hard drive configuration, but i am clueless as to how to do this from this blue screen that every avenue leads to.

hopefully there is some way of rescuing my PC...

Hello lauriAM

You will need an XP Installation CD to try to fix this.  If you do not have one, try to borrow one just to run this fix.

Configure your PC to boot from CD if it isn't already set up that way. You may need to enter the BIOS to configure the PC to boot from the CD.

Set the boot order to

floppy (if present)

CD/DVDROM

Hard disk

SAVE and EXIT

Start your PC with the XP Setup CD in the drive. When you see the "Press any key to boot from CD..." prompt, do so and let the CD-based boot process begin.

When the Recovery Console option is offered (Press R to start the Recovery Console), do so. You may be asked which Windows installation to enter, in which case type the number of the Windows installation you wish to work on (usually 1).

When prompted, enter the Administrator's password for that Windows installation. If you did not set a password just press ENTER

At the command prompt, type

chkdsk /r (there is a space before the /)

Enter

    Hey cybertek, I tried to go into F2 setup to go to the place to boot, but the cursor doesn't move anywhere. All the other pages I can move it up & down but not on that page. Can you help me?

    My computer (desktop) is having this problem. However, I do not have a windows xp recovery disk. Is there somewhere I can buy or download this and does it matter what type of computer I have? Meaning, if I have a dell, can I borrows someons HP recovery disk?

    I have the same problem, except my computer is a HP Media Center PC m7590n.  It has a separate hard drive for restoring, and 1) I try doing to restore by pressing F10 it starts at first, but then it freezes at the blue mountain screen. 2) I also tried doing the windows recovery option on the boot screen(where it gives OS options), but when I tried that, it gave me that blue screen with the same errors.  When I got the PC it did not come with any CD (everything is on that separate hard drive), so I don't have a installation CD.  Could this be related to any updates that I might have done?
