i am running a dell 4700 on windows XP. yesterday it shut down unexpectedly and now on starting up the loading screen appears but then i get a blue screen displaying stop: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x86FCE488, 0xc0000102, 0x00000000)

i have tried every start up mode in the F8 and F12 menus, but everything will take me back to this screen, it tells me to do disk deframentation, or check hard drive configuration, but i am clueless as to how to do this from this blue screen that every avenue leads to.

hopefully there is some way of rescuing my PC...

Hello lauriAM

You will need an XP Installation CD to try to fix this.  If you do not have one, try to borrow one just to run this fix.

Configure your PC to boot from CD if it isn't already set up that way. You may need to enter the BIOS to configure the PC to boot from the CD.

Set the boot order to

floppy (if present)

CD/DVDROM

Hard disk

SAVE and EXIT

Start your PC with the XP Setup CD in the drive. When you see the "Press any key to boot from CD..." prompt, do so and let the CD-based boot process begin.

When the Recovery Console option is offered (Press R to start the Recovery Console), do so. You may be asked which Windows installation to enter, in which case type the number of the Windows installation you wish to work on (usually 1).

When prompted, enter the Administrator's password for that Windows installation. If you did not set a password just press ENTER

At the command prompt, type

chkdsk /r (there is a space before the /)

Enter

Hi.  I am running an old 2005 Dell XPS Gen 4 with Windows XP.  I recently had trouble with the GeForce 6800 graphics card that came with the computer, it burned out, so I bought a Galaxy GeForce GT 240.  Card installation was easy, but when I started my computer I wanted to smash my monitor.  Everything started up fine, once I got to the Windows screen with the bar to load, I got the BSOD.  After turning the computer off, counting to 10, and turning it back on it prompted me for Safe Mode.  I was like "Sweet, safe mode solves everything!".  Wrong.  BSOD, no matter what choice I picked.   I've gotten several different codes, but it's always the same STOP: 0x00000024 then of course the 3-4 random lines which are different each time.  I called Galaxy tech support.  The man first said I had a bad card, then upon further explanation he said I needed to contact Dell to wipe my CMOD.  Of course my warranty expired in 2008 so they wanted to charge me $59 for a phone call that may not even solve my problem.  Is there anything I can do to get this problem fixed or do I need to pack this nifty piece of graphics hardware up and take it back to Best Buy?  I purchased it 3 hours ago and haven't even gotten to use it.

    Hi cybertek,

ok, I followed all of this all the way through, but my situation is slightly different. All I can get to is the boot device menu, regardless of whether I use a bootable cd ( i have tried the PE builder method) or the original Windows disc. no safe mode or anything. I ran Hard Drive Diagnostics from the Boot Device Menu, which gived me a fail - Return code: 7 message on my Samsung hard drive. Is my only alternative to try to get my files off of this drive from another PC or is there any other alternative? I also have a "boot to utility partition" selection available on the boot device menu if this can be utilized in any way

Did the system not boot up?

If not you need to start a new thread describing your problem.  Too many people have posted in this one and not everyone has the exact same problem or needs the same solution.

So, please start a new thread.

    Thanks
