blue screen and stop error 0x00000024 on startup windows XP

i am running a dell 4700 on windows XP. yesterday it shut down unexpectedly and now on starting up the loading screen appears but then i get a blue screen displaying stop: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x86FCE488, 0xc0000102, 0x00000000)

i have tried every start up mode in the F8 and F12 menus, but everything will take me back to this screen, it tells me to do disk deframentation, or check hard drive configuration, but i am clueless as to how to do this from this blue screen that every avenue leads to.

hopefully there is some way of rescuing my PC...

Hello lauriAM

You will need an XP Installation CD to try to fix this.  If you do not have one, try to borrow one just to run this fix.

Configure your PC to boot from CD if it isn't already set up that way. You may need to enter the BIOS to configure the PC to boot from the CD.

Set the boot order to

floppy (if present)

CD/DVDROM

Hard disk

SAVE and EXIT

Start your PC with the XP Setup CD in the drive. When you see the "Press any key to boot from CD..." prompt, do so and let the CD-based boot process begin.

When the Recovery Console option is offered (Press R to start the Recovery Console), do so. You may be asked which Windows installation to enter, in which case type the number of the Windows installation you wish to work on (usually 1).

When prompted, enter the Administrator's password for that Windows installation. If you did not set a password just press ENTER

At the command prompt, type

chkdsk /r (there is a space before the /)

Enter

    I'm having the same Blue screen of death issue. it started after i got a antivirus alert. is it safe to slave the drive without infecting the working computer? I have USB2.0 HDD external box to put the drive in

    Hi I'm having the same problem with a XP runned Gateway, only starting to blue screen. Using a Vista disk I was able to use the cmd prompt, and was able to check my disk to find no problems. however my CPU still goes to blue screen. I can't locate an XP disk, would this Vista disk work?

    Hi thanks again for ur prompt reply, the problem is still there, i copied all my data through the external HDD case, then as u said i downloaded the HDD diagnostic img for Samsung (My HDD is SAMSUNG S-ATA) and burned it to a cd, then i booted through that Bootable CD and it diagnosed and partitioned the HDD successfuly, then wen i inserted the XP cd to reinstall xp it still said "Setup didnot find any hardisk installed", I am helpless now, wat to do now, i have tryed almost everything frm booting with win98 Command prompt and making partition with fdisk, Drive is recognised and creats partition smoothly bt wen it comes to installing XP it just says "Setup didnot find any hardisk installed" . Note: it all happened after i changed the CMOS, can something be done to CMOS to get XP installed on my machine...???

    Kindly advise...!!!

    If the hard drive is not recognised to do a "Repair" all you can do is slave the drive in another machine to copy off all your files and data.

    Then reinstall XP

    But be aware that there might be a bigger problem with the hard drive

    Run diagnostics on the hard drive

    If you don't know the make of hard drive Hitachi Drive Fitness Test will work with any make.

    The Hitachi 3<sup>rd</sup> download is for a bootable CD

    These files need to be burned as an ISO file using a program like Imgburn

    Start ImgBurn. You will see the the main programme window and a log.

    In the main programme window >> click "Write image file to disc".

    New window: Make sure ImgBurn has found your CD/DVD burner (Destination).

    Then click the "Browse for a file" icon.

    Another window will open >> find and select the ISO image you want to burn >> click Open.

    Back at the main programme window. Click "Write".

    Then

    Configure your PC to boot from CD if it isn't already set up that way. You may need to enter the BIOS to configure the PC to boot from the CD.

    Set the boot order to

    floppy (if present)

    CD/DVDROM

    Hard disk

    SAVE and EXIT

    Put the CD in the drive and reboot. It should run then.
