blue screen and stop error 0x00000024 on startup windows XP

i am running a dell 4700 on windows XP. yesterday it shut down unexpectedly and now on starting up the loading screen appears but then i get a blue screen displaying stop: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x86FCE488, 0xc0000102, 0x00000000)

i have tried every start up mode in the F8 and F12 menus, but everything will take me back to this screen, it tells me to do disk deframentation, or check hard drive configuration, but i am clueless as to how to do this from this blue screen that every avenue leads to.

hopefully there is some way of rescuing my PC...

You will need an XP Installation CD to try to fix this.  If you do not have one, try to borrow one just to run this fix.

Configure your PC to boot from CD if it isn't already set up that way. You may need to enter the BIOS to configure the PC to boot from the CD.

Set the boot order to

floppy (if present)

CD/DVDROM

Hard disk

SAVE and EXIT

Start your PC with the XP Setup CD in the drive. When you see the "Press any key to boot from CD..." prompt, do so and let the CD-based boot process begin.

When the Recovery Console option is offered (Press R to start the Recovery Console), do so. You may be asked which Windows installation to enter, in which case type the number of the Windows installation you wish to work on (usually 1).

When prompted, enter the Administrator's password for that Windows installation. If you did not set a password just press ENTER

At the command prompt, type

chkdsk /r (there is a space before the /)

Enter

    So, you have had this problem before.

    I think it is time to check the hard drive properly with the manufacturers diagnostics.

    This one gives a better report about how many bad sectors you have on HDD...

    You can use MHDD 4.6:

    Burn as an ISO

    If you don't know the make of hard drive Hitachi Drive Fitness Test will work with any make.

    The Hitachi 3<sup>rd</sup> download is for a bootable CD

    These files need to be burned as an ISO file using a program like Imgburn

    Start ImgBurn. You will see the the main programme window and a log.

    In the main programme window >> click "Write image file to disc".

    New window: Make sure ImgBurn has found your CD/DVD burner (Destination).

    Then click the "Browse for a file" icon.

    Another window will open >> find and select the ISO image you want to burn >> click Open.

    Back at the main programme window. Click "Write".

    Then

    Configure your PC to boot from CD if it isn't already set up that way. You may need to enter the BIOS to configure the PC to boot from the CD.

    Set the boot order to

    floppy (if present)

    CD/DVDROM

    Hard disk

    SAVE and EXIT

    Put the CD in the drive and reboot. It should run then.

    im sorry i know a lot of people are asking you for help but i have a similar problem too.

    i get the blue stop screen with the same numbers as the original question.

    i have done the chkdsk /r before and it has worked but this time, when i press 'r' after the os  disk loads, it sticks on this screen 'examining 74882 mb disk 0 at id 0 on bus 0 on atapi...'

    i cant figure out how to fix it.

    Well I went where you linked and I get as far as where it says "windows XP home edition setup" this is at the top and on the bottom of the screen it says its examining 152587 MB 0 at ID 0 on Bus 0 on Atapi  and its been like this for an hour already. It does the same thing when I press "r". I am just trying to set the darn thing up. At this point I don't care. lol if this doesn't work I am just going to take it back to him and tell him to fix it hisself! Thanks for trying to help me, I appreciate it.

    hey cyvek, thanks for all the previous info. but my system keeps restarting. i ran it through chkdsk /r, and one time it was reaching 60% completed, i left the room for a few minutes, and when i came back it was 55%. i let it keep running and it eventually completed. so from there i typed 'exit' into the prompt to get it to reboot, but it is still restarting, with the 0x24 blue screen error. i am running off of xp boot disk. i am also doing another chkdsk at the moment...dont know how much it would help. any ideas?
