My Toshiba Satellite with Vista Premium 64 stopped working.I get the black screen and only F2,or F12 work(not F8)If I don't press anything, I get a message

"Windows has encountered a problem communicating with a device connected to your pc.This error can be caused by unplagging a removable storage device...,or by faulty hardware such as a hard drive or CD-ROM.Make sure any removable storage is properly connected and then restart your pc.

File:\Boot\Bcd

Status:0xc00000e9

Info an unexpected I/O error has occured."

Nothing is connected to my laptop.

Can't go to any safe modes.Tapping F8 not doing anything.Tried recovering my system with Vista recovery disc' with no luck. When I get to System Recovery Options screen,no systems come up.I tried trun System repair, get the same massage at the end.Tried to do restore points, get error message about not having any restore points. Is there a way I can restore it to factory settings with pressing some magic buttons?Or do anything else to get it to work.I must've spent at least 20 hrs trying to fix it,with no results. Thanks for any suggestions.

I don't think there's anything strange about it at all. I was defending the post from the person in question because they obviously didn't comprehend it and there have been various comments over the years as people randomly encounter the issue and searches bring them here. The poster was irate because he didn't understand that you need to boot off of a cd, flash drive, etc to make the bcd edit repairs even though that is exactly what the MS post says in the first place.

I'm sorry that you don't feel my post is worthwhile but I do offer links (possibly now outdated) where you can get a free Windows repair cd to boot from and make BCD repairs . read my follow - up post. If you can't get your PC to boot off of a cd or USB drive I don't know what to tell you, it's pretty basic. Honestly, if you can't do that you shouldn't be mucking around in the bcd either. Call a professional or someone adept in your family and have them do it. Good luck.

    Hi Debleena,

    After I typed typed**"bootrec /RebuildBcd"**

    Total Identified Windows Installations: 0

    Operation completed successfully.

    I was using Windows 10

    What should I do?

    Thanks,

    T.E

I don't know how helpful this will be and the truth is, I know very little about computer repair. However, I had the same issues reported on this post and after hitting the enter button, I received a window at the bottom of the page and did type in information seen on the Debleena post. I saw nothing and in frustration I just set the computer aside. The computer was left on overnight, it did go into sleep mode, and upon restarting, the computer is again functional.

Note, I have AVG Security and a window did appear from AVG tech advising I can contact them for any manufacturers' issue. I do not understand this as I was unaware I had such a service.  So, I really can't say what corrected my computer but  I am using an upgraded Windows 10 from a windows 7 starter on an older hp mini with not enough memory.

I guess I now need to ask whether a memory upgrade is useful on this machine or should it just be replaced given reduced prices for a replacement.

I don't think anyone can tell you whether it's worth it to upgrade RAM unless we at least  know which HP mini you have (there are many) and how much memory it currently has.

Having said that, laptops are pretty cheap these days.
