My Toshiba Satellite with Vista Premium 64 stopped working.I get the black screen and only F2,or F12 work(not F8)If I don't press anything, I get a message

"Windows has encountered a problem communicating with a device connected to your pc.This error can be caused by unplagging a removable storage device...,or by faulty hardware such as a hard drive or CD-ROM.Make sure any removable storage is properly connected and then restart your pc.

File:\Boot\Bcd

Status:0xc00000e9

Info an unexpected I/O error has occured."

Nothing is connected to my laptop.

Can't go to any safe modes.Tapping F8 not doing anything.Tried recovering my system with Vista recovery disc' with no luck. When I get to System Recovery Options screen,no systems come up.I tried trun System repair, get the same massage at the end.Tried to do restore points, get error message about not having any restore points. Is there a way I can restore it to factory settings with pressing some magic buttons?Or do anything else to get it to work.I must've spent at least 20 hrs trying to fix it,with no results. Thanks for any suggestions.

Thought I'd share the solution that worked for me. Use at your own risk.

    What you'll need:

    • Another PC running a working copy of Windows version similar to yours. This PC should have a DVD burner.
    • A blank DVD.
    • This solution assumes your problematic PC has a DVD drive it can boot from.

I ran the process below on Win10 pro 64bit, but I believe a similar flow should work for other versions of Windows.

On your secondary PC, do the following:

    1. Download the Windows Media Creation tool from Microsoft. You can try the following link, or Google your version of windows + "Media Creation Tool":

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10#34de222e-6944-44aa-8f45-8e96988880a4

    1. Run the Media Creation Tool and follow the steps to download the required version of Windows ISO file.
    2. Once the download is done, you'll be presented with an option to burn the ISO to a DVD. Select this option and burn it to your blank DVD.

On your original problematic PC, do the following:

    1. Insert the burnt DVD into the
    2. Enter your BIOS/EFI and make sure your first boot option is the DVD drive, and the hard drive is the secondary.
    3. Boot your PC and if prompted select to boot from the DVD.
    4. Once the DVD loads up, you'll need to navigate your way through the install menus to the repair section.

You need to navigate to the troubleshooting options, and select the Command Prompt.

Note #1: off the top of my head, the sequence is something like: Install Windows -> Repair your computer -> Troubleshoot -> Command Prompt

Note #2: be extra careful with the options and and make sure you do not inadvertently delete/reinstall the OS.. ;)

    1. Once in the command prompt, run the following commands one by one to (backup your old BCD and) rebuild a new BCD:

    bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup

    c:

    cd boot

    attrib bcd -s -h -r

    ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old

    bootrec /RebuildBcd

Optional step: I would also recommend to check your drive for errors at this stage, e.g.:

    chkdsk /R D:

    1. If all the commands in the previous step passed without an issue, close the window with the X and restart Windows. That's pretty much it!

    Hope this helps someone..

p.s.: here's an additional link that might provide more info ont he BCD rebuild step, for those interested in it:
