Random freezes with windows 7 - 64 bit

Well I have been freeze free for 9 days now, since my last post I started to get freezes when playing music, but oddly not video?

I disabled the onboard sound and am now using my Creative SB Audigy 2ZS platinum card, I also reseated my ram, these new Asus boards only have a clip at one end for ram now and I did notice that one of the sticks clicked at the non clipped end when I was checking, the ram seems to be a very tight fit on my Asus P7P55D Evo board.

I also disabled the turbo boost, I really have to say I haven't noticed any lag for doing this and Win7 experience index is unchanged, I would have hoped that there would have been a setting either in the bios or Windows to limit the maximum overclock, the three setting in my bios do not seem to make any difference to the turbo in Windows, and always if it peeked over the 3.8Ghz this would be where I got freezes.

Reinstalling Windows 7 didn't fix it this time. In fact, last night I had 2 blue screens. One spontaniously, and one as I asked the computer to shut down. I was baffled why it rebooted after telling it to shut down, only to find I get the "Windows recovered from an error" message. I have no idea if these blue screens are telling me anything. All I get is vertical lines on a dark screen, no STOP code or anything of the sort, then the computer reboots itself.

This is rarer though.

I'm convinced there is *something* network related in all this, either a home network or the internet. After the Chkdsk I'd set up ran fully and found no errors, I let it boot to the desktop making sure my USB wireless adapter was unplugged. No access to any network. I ran an anti virus scan. Took 2 hours, not a single freeze, no viruses found either. Ran Spybot, cleared some tracking cookies.

After all that, 2 hours of running without a hitch, I put the adapter in. It connects fine. MSN signs in. I open Firefox, type an address.....freeze.

I reboot, type in the same address....freeze.

So I reboot and go for a shower, just leaving it to its own devices. Came back, and it's fine. Opened Firefox...no problem. Opened the sites slowly...no problem, hense me being able to type this.

I'm debating setting up an RMA with Asus to get the motherboard swapped, see if that's the issue. It would be awesome if it was that simple.

Kinda wish I'd build this computer *after* Windows 7 came out. As of right now, I don't know if this is a W7 issue or a hardware issue.

What solved the freezing problem for me was turning off the Workstation service.

This is not an ideal solution, as this is the service used to manage remote connections using SMB protocols (e.g. remote desktop, file and printer sharing, etc.).

However, once you've started the computer, you can go to start, type "services" and run as admin, then find Workstation and double click to open it's properties, there you can set it to start manually, and then simply press the start button. I haven't had any freezes using this method, however this is still far from satisfactory.

Right now I'm thinking maybe the service file got corrupted, and I'm looking into ways to repair it, but have had no luck with that so far.

i have been searching forums for a while now for a difinitive solution to this freezing issue, and as far as i can tell, there is more than one solution depending on the individuals hardware. For me what has fixed/stabilised the issue is to perform an update based around some ASUS motherboard drivers.

In my situation the computer would freeze after start up, maybe within 5 minutes. the only way to get around this freeze was to hard boot it as no I/O was recognised. One clue that landed me to my solution was a large number of people using ASUS motherboards, and Creative sound cards also the Intel bridge chipsets seemed to feature alot, oh and of course windows 64 bit.

i simply downloaded and used the ATK0110 driver utillity, and now i have been freeze free for a long period of time.
