Random freezes with windows 7 - 64 bit

Well I'm 'glad' I'm not the only one. Never ever had this problem with Vista, but since I bought this PC with Windows 7 this thing CONSTANTLY freezes (sometimes up to 5 - 10 times a day) when working on certain things. I initially thought it was related to running audio whilst using Office, then whilst using Dreamweaver, then whilst using Thunderbird until pretty much anything causes this heap of cR*p to just freeze. Mouse goes cold, ctrl+atl del won't bring up the oprion to start task manager so the only thing left to do is to manually power down. I actually did a reinstall thanks to utterly useless microsoft update error lead me to a convoluted 'OS upgrade' - which failed and nearly destroyed my PC - but the issue is still there. Is it just useless Windows 7, a compatibility issue with the software I run (which worked fine on Vista) or what? Really doing my nut in!

You mention an association with audio.  Do you have an audio driver installed, such as Realtek? Uninstall it  and reboot (thereby invoking the default Microsoft audio driver).  Don't worry; the audio will still work.  That might help with your issue.

I've had the same problem and it was really **** me off. I ended up doing a full system restore and that worked for like 6 months and it started to do it again every 10 secs for a split second it would freeze almost like it was having a hiccup. I spent about three hours trying to figure the problem out and came across this. http://support.microsoft.com/hotfix/KBHotfix.aspx?kbnum=2265716kbln=en-us#step2 I requested it and installed. My computer still did it until I did a restart and have now used my computer for about three hours and it has not glitched once I tested it by watching a movie trailer online, which before use to take me a forever and really **** me off. Hope it works for you.

Does everyone who's having this problem use an Intel processor and an Asus Motherboard?

That seems to be the case from what I've read I have an i5 and an asus motherboard and have been having this problem recently and cant fix it. While I'm playing a game it will freeze the last sound I heard will usually start to loop or sometimes if I'm in a skype call the quality deteriorates and eventually the sound just stops my screen then goes black and after a few minutes my system seems to catch up with its self. I've tried cleaning my registry, ran a memory diagnostic, ran several virus scans on different programs, defragmented my hard drive and nothing has done the trick. Has anyone found a solution to this problem? The only difference I see between the problem I'm having to most people on this forum is my system has been running windows 7 home premium 64 bit fine for just about a year now and just last weekend this started happening.
