Random freezes with windows 7 - 64 bit

An update, we'll see how it goes.

Right, following continued re-boots that gradually got to the point where even safe-mode would not load the Windows7 repair utility kicked in. Followed that through and let it repair whatever it could find..note MS please say what you find and what you are repairing.

Now to eliminate any overheating I've just had the vacumn on it for at least 15 minutes. Just sitting on the intake and exhaust grids. Next I've disabled the cat5 network card/port. Reason for this is a) I use wireless b) There is a record of other later laptops from Acer having the Cat5 wired card causing IRQ conflicts and (took a break here for 20 mins while I had tea, this would have in the past resulted in the freeze occuring, not so this time it would seem, we'll see how long this goes for timed at 18:57 now) they have released a bios update to fix this. There is a more recent bios update for my laptop but although I've downloaded it acer does say do not use these unless directed to by one of their operatives...we'll see.

So in addition to disabling the cat5 card on the laptop I've also disabled something called HomeGroup Provider in the services, this was also erroring in the system logs. A re-boot has been done since these were all disabled. I'm now going to do what I usually do, have a go on betfair tonight with several browser windows open for in game betting and monitoring the scores. This would over the last few weeks have caused the freeze up - periods of inactivity followed by frenzied mouse and keyboard :-) . I have also left a ticket with acer (from about 03:30 this morning but no update yet. Basically asking them if the new bios update was to fix the problem with the cat5 network card/port as in the releases for the later models.)

I'll keep the thread updated as I go..would be nice if anyone else was watching/reading. A few comments, good or bad would not go amiss or be dismissed. I'm open to fixing this once and for all.

All going fine at the moment, 6 windows open, moving them around, couple of feeds coming in as well. It has locked/frozen by now in the past. I'll keep fingers crossed and if it continues till the games have finished I'll leave it on over night.

Report back in the morning...it's looking promising so far but obviously I need to identify what has caused the problem, be interested to see what acer say, eventually when them deem to reply.

hey, hey,.,moved a five up to £25, not bad.

The laptop seems stable so I'm going to leave it on over night. Slight problem though as I've applied several solutions at the same time. I'd hope really to rule out overheating as I would expect, and hope that the onboard systems would actually shut down, bsod or otherwise and I've not had any of those.

It does smack of Win 7 not quite ready

I do mean laptops though as they seem more tempremetal, my desktop has been up over 8 months with no problems. Plus it has has the cpu and memory well over clocked!

If I get a reply from Acer I' ll post here...my god this thread is long.

Ive just spent the last two hours reading this thread - good lord. I think everyone has tried everything, and the fixes are so randomized, I think at this point its just Windows 7 is screwy. Sad, coz I love the OS and really don't want to downgrade back to XP. Esp given the amount of time it took me to install my 394934939439 programs :rolls eyes:

Im having the same prob - no BSOD's, but every now and again, my system will lock up and I have to do a hard reboot (and oddly enuff, I get visual disturbances like pink flickers, and one time it had horizontal lines flicker before the freeze) At first, I suspected it was my geforce... til I stumbled on the same problem occuring so rampantly on the web. Ive only had it freeze up twice, but thats enuff to alarm me. And since my machine is a 3D workhorse, it will severely ____ ME OFF if I lose a model in the process of a screen freeze... or anything, really.

My system is brand new - just bought it over Xmas and had it custom built.... heres my specs: Windows 7 Pro 64 bit - Asus mobo - Phenom II 6-core processor - Geforce GT240 - 8 GB of RAM.... not sure about the brand.. its not a main brand for certain tho (yeah, prolly gonna upgrade that eventually too)

Ive gone thru the paces - Checked my event viewer and all it says was that windows was terminated unexpectedly. All my updates are current. My drivers are current. And Im not running that AV either (using microsoft security essentials here) I dont even have that audio driver on my system, so that can't be it. Also, LSASS and the other dll arent even running in my processes. I have, however, upped my system performance to High and I disabled Aero. Makes sense to me that its some kind of performance issue. I guess we shall see :shrugs: god only knows at this point. If it works though, Ill post back.

Figured Id post, nevertheless.... strength in numbers, right? FIX THIS MICROSOFT!
