Random freezes with windows 7 - 64 bit

I have it partitioned fairly much as you said.  I was interested in your point that the disk needed reformatting prior to the install? Is it NTSF or FAT or?

My work computer W7 Enterprise is crashing on Explorer frequently as well.  I need to to get admin on to it!

I can't help thinking that with the size of this thread alone that there are some issues with W7 and that MS needs to get off there backside and have a good look.  Anyway I will give up now.

Windows 7 should be formatted with NTFS.

Sadly, I don't think Microsoft see it that way. There are currently a little over 800 posts on this thread. A previous poster suggests that there are 5 posts on other sites for every one on this sight. OK so that's 4,800 of us who are suffering this problem. Lets call it 5000. Seems like a chunky number to us who are suffering, but to the mighty Microsoft Money Machine its peanuts. According to Wikipedia they had sold 400 million copies of W7 by 12 July 2011, so I guess we are talking 500 million by now. So to Microsoft that is a failure rate of 1 in every 100,000 copies sold. 

Just over a year ago the BBC reported on the failure rate on the MOT test on UK cars and small vans. The best of the manufacturers was Toyota who had a failure rate of 11.2 % i.e. 1 in 9. Now I am not suggesting that these are even comparable tests, just that in other equipment that we regularly use we tolerate much higher failure rates. So whilst Microsoft give the impression that they could not care a **** about this freezing problem by not responding to this growing list of unhappy customers (it would be nice to hear from them that they are actually working on the problem), I suspect the reality is that it is probably low on the list of their concerns for two reasons:-

1. as indicated the incidence is low, and
2. there seems to be no common symptom which thus makes it very difficult to know where to start to try to find the cause.

Yes mine freezes typically 6 to 8 times a day, somewhat less now that I have swapped out the graphics card for a less fancy one. Which brings me onto my pet theory of the cause: some sort of clash between the CPU in the PC and the processor on the graphics card. Suggested by the fact my wife's lower spec PC does not have a separate graphics card, and never freezes, and the swap mentioned above.

Recognising the low incidence, and the consequent lack of impact on Microsoft, for a while I took comfort from the thought “just wait until some journalist on a major paper hits this problem and starts sounding off and giving Microsoft some major bad publicity, then we will see some action” until it dawned on me that they are all probably using Apple Macs anyway.

Time to start saving up for a Mac.

Nick, thanks for the tip. Windows 7 started freezing up randomly as you noted, sometimes would run for hours ok and other times it would shut down immediately upon startup. Power supply shound't be an issue as system is plugged into its own 20 amp circuit (if that's what you mean by power supply). I'll give it try.

Yes!... tried changing the HDD but no luck.

Don't try and find faults with your machine.. Its obvious where the problem lies.
