4 GB SDHC card not opening in XP with SP3 loaded

I have a built in card reader that has always run my SD cards fine - but now it is balky when I try to read a PNY 4GB SDHC card.  I think it read it at one time but not recently.  I have tried to download the hotfixes I found in the knowledge base but 2 of them are apparently older than SP3 and the 3rd doesn't have an English language selection.  In Device Manager, the system says the device is working properly.  I have tried to update the driver but am told there is not a newer driver - I have tried to uninstall and reinstall the driver and that doesn't help either.  Anybody have any other ideas or help??  I am using Windows XP Media Center edition with SP3 loaded in a Gateway desktop computer.

If this is any help - this card also does not open if I connect an external 2.0 USB card reader to this desktop - but this card works fine in my ACER netbook and in my Toshiba Satellite notebook - both running Windows XP.

Everyone!!!

You need to note that both the SD and SDHC "cards" have the exact same physical size but the internal electronics are different.   To read a SDHC card, the reader MUST be able to read the SDHC electronics correctly.  You can not read a SDHC card on a standard SD reader but a SDHC reader can read a SD card.

    Hi.

I'm about as computer inept as you can get. My problem is that I have a computer that won't read an sdhc card but will read an sd card. I like your answer but I don't know what to uninstall and where to go to do that. I'm running windows xp with sp3. I've tried the up dates and got the same answers as many people above. I'm hoping not to have to buy a new reader because I have a very limited budget. Any help would be appreciated. thanks

An easy solution that I just stumbled on, after spending some quality work hours looking for updated drivers, downloading hotfixes that wouldn't install because I have SP3...and reading everyone and anyone's forum contribution - well the easy solution for me was to put a smaller size SD card, i.e. 512 MB, back into my built-in reader.  The card opened, I explored a little, then removed it.  I put my 8GB SDHC back into the same slot, and voila - it worked again.

It's worth a shot, especially to do first, before wasting time looking at everyone else's answers.

I use a Lenovo T500, running Windows XP, SP3, with an internal card reader.

    ...worth a try...

    Hey guys!

To Just those who are curious to know whether or not a standard SD card reader could read SDHC cards over 4GB, good news is that there is a fix i found at least worked to my laptop HP NC6120 is with the driver update for smart card from Texas Instruments Media card reader ver 2.0 which can be downloaded from the following link: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&swItem=ob-59738-1&jumpid=reg\_R1002\_USEN. make sure u first uninstall the previous version of the driver before installing this.

So give it a try for those having HP systems with a standard card reader to read a SDHC card. good luck!!

I think it is quite obvious we are dealing with a number of separate issues. Some are hardware related, others are driver related, and some may even be card related.

I mostly use a old HP NW9440 laptop which, under XP SP3, would read some cards (even 16 GB SDHC ones) but not others, even some 2GB cards. These cards are also not accessible on my old Dell 700m laptop with XP SP3. I just learnt to use an external USB device that could access the cards. It was all quite random - some hardware devices would read some of the "difficult" cards, others wouldn't.

However, when I upgraded to Windows 7 (skipped Vista), the computer would pretty much read any card I would throw at the NW9440's SD slot. Obviously, *in my case*, it wasn't a hardware problem (the NW9440 has a PCIxx12 TI chip) since they worked under Windows 7 quite well.

Since some of the programs I run that need access to proprietary hardware-formatted SD cards only run on XP/Vista, I decided to revisit the issue. After much hunting and trying out several drivers, I found one (version 2.0.0.8A) on the HP site that appears to solve the problem. I am now able to use a 16GB SDHC card with XP SP3 as well as the other SD cards that never worked before. This is not the driver that HP has on its NW9440 driver page, of course.

FWIW - if anyone has a HP computer with the same problem, it might be worth giving that HP driver a try. The one that worked for me was 2.0.0.8A, which is SP38607.exe. I have not as yet found a similar solution for the Dell, which uses a PCIxx20 TI chip and at the moment has driver version 1.0.2.5. I have not installed Windows 7 on the Dell either, so don't know if it would work like the HP did.
