How to create restore point in windows 7

  • I just bought a new computer that's running windows 7. My previous computer had XP. I would open system restore  create my own restore points periodically. Is there a way to do that in windows 7. When i open system restore, the only option I get is restore to an earlier date. Not create a restore point.

To create a restore point for windows 7 Start / Control Panel / System / System Protection / At bottom of screen last button on right says create. Click it and it will ask you to create a restore point discription for the restore. hope this helps you.

Under WinXP the creation of restore points and the restore function itself were in the same place. Under Windows 7 you have a couple of methods:

  • Control Panel / System / System protection
  • Through the script below.

To do it with a script, save the code below as ManualRestorePoint.vbs, then double-click it.

    Oberwald, your script works perfectly for people that know how to create and use VBS. Thanks very much. I have a USB flash drive that I call "Toolbox" and I keep helpful utilities on it. Before working on a client computer I always like to create a Restore Point and your script was a great solution - faster than using the GUI if I already have the Toolbox plugged in (which I usually do). Thanks again.

    Very helpful, thank you. I couldn't find any instructions on how to do it that came with Win 7. With Windows XP it was so simple, one wonders why MicroSoft changed it. It's like the same frustration one would get if when  buying a new dictionary, you find words alphabetically arranged, but in reverse.
