Mouse Pointer is getting messed up

Hi,

I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit and have nothing fancy -- regular wired mouse, keyboard, etc.

Every once in a while, my mouse pointer gets messed up i.e. turns into a strange looking line/bar. This seems to happen when I have a few applications running but couldn't tell you if a particular application seems to be causing the issue.

Any idea how I can prevent this issue?

A Quick fix has been found, does not prevent the problem from reoccurring though, go to control panel-> Hardware -> mouse -> pointer options and set Pointer Trails to yes.

Hi Imsam67,

Welcome to Microsoft answers.

This might be an issue related with the drivers for the mouse after installing Windows 7; you may try updating the drivers for the mouse from the Device Manager and check.

·         Are you using Desktop computer or Laptop?

1.         Click Start.

2.         Type Device Manager in Start search.

3.         Expand Mice and other Pointing devices in device manager window.

4.         Right Properties.

5.         Click on driver tab.

6.         Click Update drivers.

7.          Click OK.

Check if any exclamation marks are shown with the device. The exclamation mark shows an issue with the driver installed.

I also suggest that you manually download the drivers from the manufacturer’s website and try installing the same on the computer and check.

You may also try connecting mouse to different port and check, this is to narrow down the issue if the issue is with mouse or with ports. You may also try connecting different mouse to the computer and try connecting this mouse to different computer and check.

    I also have this problem. It normally happens after my kid has been playing games on my PC. The strange bit is that he is only 3 years old :P All he plays is an online "educational" website's  games. www.uptoten.com but it doesn't happen every time. Could it have something to do with flash?

    Same as most of you, Win 7 x64, 2 displays of which only the primary is affected. If I launch a game, even the pointer in the game is messed up so I think it's more of a graphics anomaly than anything else. I have updated my graphics driver to the latest but that does not fix the problem.

    Just as a matter of interest.... Who of you guys having this problem has something OTHER than ATI graphics? I have an HD 5850 and the problem only started after installing that. Prior I had an Nvidia card.

    Edit: Okay so after posting this I decided to follow up on my hunch. It is in fact ATI related and no fix for it as yet. Have a look at all the frustrated people with the same problem.... HERE

    I to have this problem. I also have 2 displays. I also use ATI, crossfire 4850's. I also use windows 7 64-bit.

    So its either Windows and 2 displays, Ati drivers, or all three.

    I ruled out ATI and 2 displays as I never had this problem in vista with the same setup.

    I did not happen when I first built this machine a year and 3 months ago. That being so I think its the ATI drivers as its only started happening in the last 4 months. 

    Does any1 have a Microsoft Sidewinder mouse? This could be driver problems for the Microsoft intellipoint. If no one else is using it though it rules it out.

    ATI 5870.

    Duel monitor.

    Yes, exactly the same. It's messed up after exiting a full screen game. *Starcraft 2 in my case. 2nd monitor works fine.

    I guess it's some problem with windows 7?
