Mouse Pointer is getting messed up

Hi,

I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit and have nothing fancy -- regular wired mouse, keyboard, etc.

Every once in a while, my mouse pointer gets messed up i.e. turns into a strange looking line/bar. This seems to happen when I have a few applications running but couldn't tell you if a particular application seems to be causing the issue.

Any idea how I can prevent this issue?

A Quick fix has been found, does not prevent the problem from reoccurring though, go to control panel-> Hardware -> mouse -> pointer options and set Pointer Trails to yes.

Hi Imsam67,

Welcome to Microsoft answers.

This might be an issue related with the drivers for the mouse after installing Windows 7; you may try updating the drivers for the mouse from the Device Manager and check.

·         Are you using Desktop computer or Laptop?

1.         Click Start.

2.         Type Device Manager in Start search.

3.         Expand Mice and other Pointing devices in device manager window.

4.         Right Properties.

5.         Click on driver tab.

6.         Click Update drivers.

7.          Click OK.

Check if any exclamation marks are shown with the device. The exclamation mark shows an issue with the driver installed.

I also suggest that you manually download the drivers from the manufacturer’s website and try installing the same on the computer and check.

You may also try connecting mouse to different port and check, this is to narrow down the issue if the issue is with mouse or with ports. You may also try connecting different mouse to the computer and try connecting this mouse to different computer and check.

    Add me to the list.  I'm using W7 Pro x64, with a Gigabyte ATI 4850 1GB and a hybrid setup to my motherboard chipset which is a Giabyte board with a ATI 3250 onboard. The monitor I have hooked up to the onboard shows the pointer normally, but the two monitor hooked up to the 4850 show the line. It also happened to me after tabing out of a full-screen game. It has to be something with how they program the cursor to hide during a game, then not un-hiding, when the game is not fully shut-down.

    I'm also using a Microsoft Wireless Laser 5000 mouse; though I think we've seen this isn't a mouse problem.

    Add me to the list as well except I have about 100 laptops and 20 of them are experiencing the issue. We have laptops with Intel 945 chipset mobile display.  Updated the video card driver and the lenovo trackpoint mouse driver. Nothing still get the issue.

    My hope is to open a ticket with Microsoft to get somewhere.

    Let me know if anyone finds out more information.

    I am also having this problem and it has been driving me nuts. Sometimes I get the cursor back to normal by moving the pointer between my dual displays. Sometimes it gets worse, like a block of rainbow garble and then my screens will go to solid colors (usually black and grey) and my computer will lock up. I have to reboot at this point, usually losing what I was working on. I really love Windows 7, but this is a major problem that makes an otherwise stable OS, very unstable. Microsoft should be all over this issue and make sure it's fixed by ATI or whoever is at fault.

    My device manager says I'm using a ATI Radeon HD 4600 series.

    Running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. 

    I will try setting my mouse pointer's trails to on, and hope that I never see this problem again. :)
