Windows 7 has High CPU Usage and slow performance

Hello all,

I've searched the forums, but was unable to find anything relevant. I recently upgraded to Windows 7 from Vista. It was running fine for about a week then all of a sudden everything started running very slow. I checked the the processes tab in task manager and I am constantly running at 70-80% CPU usage. I think this is very high considering the computer is only a few months old. It seems like others are having this problem as well, but no real solutions.

I have turned off file indexing as well as disabled the HD audio device.

Please help!

AMD 9550 Quad-Core

64-bit

6GB Ram

I think the answer might be the Windows Media Player and Windows Media Network Sharing Services as zxypher suggested. The fix for that is to adjust were the Windows Media Player services search for media files.

It seems to be a bad problem for me as well upgrading from Vista to Windows 7. The default search location for media is set to C:\Users\ instead of down in the My Music folders.

Go into Media Player. From the menu -> File -> Manage libraries -> select each library (music, video, pictures, recorded tv [if you have]) and check the paths that it is managing and make sure it is not too close to the root of the C: drive. For example, it should be something like c:\users\Jim\Music and c:\users\Public\Music BUT NOT **** c:\users as they will cause the whole directory tree to be re-indexed over and over (when you surf the web or change any files in your profile).

If you have multiple users who login to the computer, you may need to repeat the process for each user if all users have added managed folders which are actively changing on a regular basis.

If this is your issue and you do it correctly, then the high CPU should drop in minutes (or seconds down to nothing).

This is the CORRECT way to adjust the WMNSS/WMPNetwk.exe process issues.

Same thing here, trying to run COD-Modern Warfare 2, all the way to the menu's it's all good.

but when it enter the game and i start to play, the game stutter like crazy and CPU usage is hanging out around 90-100% and I can figure wth is wrong with it!

I'm having a similar problem with a friend's computer I'm looking at. On top of the high CPU usage, games whose hardware requirements fall far below the system's configuration are lagging horribly. Offline and online games alike stutter like crazy and CPU usage is hanging out around 90-100%. Anyone have any ideas on that? Personally I wonder if 7 is just too heavy on OS for his build.....

I do not have your answer but I do share your pain. My recently purchased and installed Windows 7 Home Premium at first ran just fine. I have been uninstalling software all morning and it seems that Kodak AIO software when removed improved the situation a little.

PC Stats Asus M2A-VM HDMI 1.XX, 2944 Mb installed memory, 2.10 ghz AMD Athlon 64 Dual Core, 80.02 Gig Usable HD space, 48 gig free space.

Problem: Immediately after start up, low cpu and low memory usage. After a time, a short time, memory and cpu usage jumps up. Worst case, memory usage is 2.9 gig and cpu usage is 99%. Then it seems to improve, memory and cpu usage drops. Then on it's own with no user input or anything to provoke the problem, up goes the usage problem.

I have another Windows 7 machine, eval which has been installed on that pc longer than the newly purchased and installed 7 and it runs just fine. Interesting thing here is that the eval. machines is a old socket 939 AMD. Go figure.

It is pretty sad that so many of the horror stories of Vista are lingering just under the surface in Windows 7. In viewing posts on the net several have mentioned Vista links services, etc. in Windows 7 that are suspected trouble makers in Windows 7. Come on Microsoft, give us a break. What is going on here?

Reinstalled Windows, all is well for now. Proves the problem to be of a software nature, not hardware.
