Windows 7 has High CPU Usage and slow performance

Hello all,

I've searched the forums, but was unable to find anything relevant.  I recently upgraded to Windows 7 from Vista.  It was running fine for about a week then all of a sudden everything started running very slow.  I checked the the processes tab in task manager and I am constantly running at 70-80% CPU usage.  I think this is very high considering the computer is only a few months old.  It seems like others are having this problem as well, but no real solutions.

I have turned off file indexing as well as disabled the HD audio device. 

Please help!

AMD 9550 Quad-Core

64-bit

6GB Ram

I think the answer might be the Windows Media Player and Windows Media Network Sharing Services as zxypher suggested.  The fix for that is to adjust were the Windows Media Player services search for media files. 

It seems to be a bad problem for me as well upgrading from Vista to Windows 7.  The default search location for media is set to C:\Users\ instead of down in the My Music folders.

Go into Media Player.  From the menu -> File -> Manage libraries -> select each library (music, video, pictures, recorded tv [if you have]) and check the paths that it is managing and make sure it is not too close to the root of the C: drive.  For example, it should be something like c:\users\Jim\Music and c:\users\Public\Music BUT NOT **** c:\users as they will cause the whole directory tree to be re-indexed over and over (when you surf the web or change any files in your profile).

If you have multiple users who login to the computer, you may need to repeat the process for each user if all users have added managed folders which are actively changing on a regular basis.

If this is your issue and you do it correctly, then the high CPU should drop in minutes (or seconds down to nothing).

This is the CORRECT way to adjust the WMNSS/WMPNetwk.exe process issues.

    I found the solution to my extreme cpu usage to be going to Control Panel/Adminstrative Tools/Services and locating the Message Queing Service and Disabling it.  This had the most profound effect.  This was an issue with Windows 2000 and seems MS has brought this back in Windows 7.  So much for living with slow computer and crashes.  So far so good!

    Bon ,

     Yes that's what I was afraid of, so if your  on Skype and you end this process you would have to reboot to get sound back. When this started happening to me I was searching forums for a fix for audiodg.exe, on the Microsoft site, they mention a hotfix KB 981013, you can request by email, I did that but they warn it is not fully tested and won't be fully tested until SP2, as to when that is I don't know nor does Mocrosoft. When I tried this fix it I unzipped it and it can me back with a message "this fix is not for your PC" I have a 64 bit laptop and in didn't work for that either, I actually rang Microsoft in Malaysia and ask them to send link for 32 and 64 bit systems, But soon this desktop wil be a rebuild to a 64 bit OS, and hofully things will change?

    Actually my desktop has started to behave , I got through several hours last night with out a problem. My problen started with a string of events, I swapped hard drives to a larger on did a fresh install, one of the programs I use in chat was off line for website maintenance, so I couldn't reacitvate with a key. My cleaning tool System Mechanics causes it when it is optermising( a fancy defrag) the hard drive, I only use WD drives, internally and extenally, I will break that as my next main drive will be a 60GB SSD, with a spindle slave drive for storage, either a raid config or a 10000 rpm drive, no saying that will solve anything but my problem started with a hardware change, coinsidence I don't know? If I had the money I may go Apple, no more problems??

    Hi Pisces,

    yes this file is on top of the list. and yes i already tried to stop this program but all audio goes down. is service pack 2 (for 64 bit win7) coming soon? is there anyway for this issue to be resolved? my old ASUS F8Vr does not have any issues and this has been with me for 3 years now. this also is running Win 7 Prof 64 bit (practically a mirror of what i have on my PC now.

    can this also be a hardware issue?

    Bon,

    If this file RtkNGUI64.exe is at the top of the list then this is your problem. My whole PC used to freeze to the stage where it would freeze to the point wher I would have to reboot, while in chat, but this was audiodg.exe, I can end this process in task manager, and it settles down for a bit, but using Skype, if you end this RtkNGUI64.exe process will you sound bounce back? I Know you use it for bussiness, so i don't want you using my crude fix if it is business, unless you try it out first. Also think about using Resource monitor (search for it on your laptop and creat a desktop shortcut, you may get some more info ftom that. I think it is a Windows problem, but from other forums "wait until service pack 2", or microsoft will hanball you to one of their partners, like Gizmo to fix, who charge like a wounded bull. Being a laptop you have a smaller CPU, to reduce heat and also running on battery you have to sacrifice performance to get the most out of you battery, 2-3 hours
