Windows 7 moves/resizes windows on monitor power cycle

I have a new W7 ultimate install on a new PC (AOpen DEX4501 w intel GM45 graphics). I have installed the latest Intel graphics drivers 8.15.10.2202, and all relevant windows updates.

It is connected via HDMI to a Grundig Misuro HD TV. My resolution is set to 1600x900, windows recommended resolution is 1920x1080 but this displays badly so I don't use it.

When Windows sleeps, or I turn off (then later on) the monitor, most windows are moved/resized to the upper left with the lower right at 1024x768.

Firefox, Excel(2003),Explorer windows resize/move, Outlook(2003) did not move/resize.

I have a Samurize (Gadget like) display on the right which someimes get relocated to the top left, but not this morning. The windows resize/move also happens when Samurize is not running.

I have found three other entries related to this;

They don't seem to have been resolved for a long time.

This is a Windows monitor power managment issue, can it be fixed please it is very annoying.

I won't be recommending W7 to others with such issues outstanding.

I have found a work-around.

Using Sysinternals ProcessMonitor I found that Windows was accessing the following Registry path;

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\Configuration

My system had three entries;

DELF003YY7707BR0MUL_30_07D7_6A^9A3774EB79DEE3E3E38496CC7DF4D936

QHD32000001_31_07D6_D5^63E1ABDD175E7871DCAEB710418A0F75

SIMULATED_8086_2A42_00000000_00020000_1010100^CDE365D1B3F0942F0CF38BFB8E127AB4

Under each is a tree called "00" two of the keys are

PrimSurfSize.cx

PrimSurfSize.cy

Under "00" was another branch also called "00" two of the keys are;

ActiveSize.cx

ActiveSize.cy

The first two of the configs (ie DELF00... & QHD3...) the above keys were 1440x900,

so they were not involved.

The third (SIMULATED...) were set to 1024x768.

I changed these to 1600x900 and the problem was solved.

Further I changed resolution (via control panel) to 1920x1080, the moving/resize issue returned,

but the lower right corner was set to 1600x900, ie the SIMULATED... settings.

So for some reason one of the configs does not get set correctly.

I don't know why there are three configs, I have only ever used one monitor.

Hope this helps someone out there...

How can Microsoft advertise that this latest release is ready for large-scale business use? Do they think everyone uses 1920x1080 laptops?

And how they (Microsoft) don't follow what's being discussed here? Are they only listening now to the privacy-concerned feedback inside Windows 10? After 3 years not a single word from them!

I tried updating to Windows 10 1511, but unfortunately no luck for me

By the way I am connecting using Geforce 760GTX and a Display Port. Frustrating - hopefully some guys in MS have a similar config!

I have a very similar work config and am still experiencing problems with Win 10 1511... (My surface book and my home desktop also on that latest release, and still have the problem)

So it's clear that update has not fixed anything.

I'm of the opinion that MS is not aware of this issue. It would be excellent if someone could prove me wrong by posting evidence that they are aware and working on it.

My two cents is that it could be an issue where the displays are first starting in a "safe" 1080p mode before negotiating the higher resolution... nothing else explains why the simulated registry fixes are ineffective...

I thin i found a workaround for this issue by combining the ideas of previous posts.

(my PC is Windows 10 TH2, Intel HD4600 with HDMI port, Changhong 4k monitor)

Here is the procedure.
1. delete all extra registry entries under ...GraphicDrivers\Configuration and GraphicDrivers\Connectivity, leaving only the entry corresponding to my monitor (MST00301...)
2. before putting monitor to sleep, just type "WIN" + "D" combo key to minimize all desktop windows.
3. after turning on monitor, type "WIN" + "D" again to restore all windows.

Guys,

I have been reading this post since it began.

I am not having this exact problem but rather a different version. When I turn off some monitors (of the 4 I have running at any time) all windows, the desktop and task bar tend to move "somewhere' off my main screen (left on) and i have no way of locating them! Even right clicking and selecting "Screen Resolution" seems to open the window somewhere on a turned off monitor!

Turning the monitors back on tends to reorder everything back in place, sometime i have to just physically reset the computer because even on the turned-back-on monitors nothing shows!

I am also wondering if there is a utility out there that saves and restores windows positions in the same way as "Iconoid" and "ShellIconRestore" keep and manage locations of icons on the desktop. Try these for the desktop icons they work very well.

I also use "ShellFolderFixUI" which fixes the where and the size of opened windows and allows them to opened back where you had them placed and sized before you last closed them.

Maybe someone would find these helpful, but I am still looking for a utility to save the location of all opened windows and restores them with a key combo, that should help alleviate the problem discussed in this forum.
