Windows 7 moves/resizes windows on monitor power cycle

I have a new W7 ultimate install on a new PC (AOpen DEX4501 w intel GM45 graphics). I have installed the latest Intel graphics drivers 8.15.10.2202, and all relevant windows updates.

It is connected via HDMI to a Grundig Misuro HD TV. My resolution is set to 1600x900, windows recommended resolution is 1920x1080 but this displays badly so I don't use it.

When Windows sleeps, or I turn off (then later on) the monitor, most windows are moved/resized to the upper left with the lower right at 1024x768.

Firefox, Excel(2003),Explorer windows resize/move, Outlook(2003) did not move/resize.

I have a Samurize (Gadget like) display on the right which someimes get relocated to the top left, but not this morning. The windows resize/move also happens when Samurize is not running.

I have found three other entries related to this;

They don't seem to have been resolved for a long time.

This is a Windows monitor power managment issue, can it be fixed please it is very annoying.

I won't be recommending W7 to others with such issues outstanding.

I have found a work-around.

Using Sysinternals ProcessMonitor I found that Windows was accessing the following Registry path;

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\Configuration

My system had three entries;

DELF003YY7707BR0MUL_30_07D7_6A^9A3774EB79DEE3E3E38496CC7DF4D936

QHD32000001_31_07D6_D5^63E1ABDD175E7871DCAEB710418A0F75

SIMULATED_8086_2A42_00000000_00020000_1010100^CDE365D1B3F0942F0CF38BFB8E127AB4

Under each is a tree called "00" two of the keys are

PrimSurfSize.cx

PrimSurfSize.cy

Under "00" was another branch also called "00" two of the keys are;

ActiveSize.cx

ActiveSize.cy

The first two of the configs (ie DELF00... & QHD3...) the above keys were 1440x900,

so they were not involved.

The third (SIMULATED...) were set to 1024x768.

I changed these to 1600x900 and the problem was solved.

Further I changed resolution (via control panel) to 1920x1080, the moving/resize issue returned,

but the lower right corner was set to 1600x900, ie the SIMULATED... settings.

So for some reason one of the configs does not get set correctly.

I don't know why there are three configs, I have only ever used one monitor.

Hope this helps someone out there...

Similar setup as you. I have the Dell P2415Q and NVIDIA GTX 970.

I use an LG 31MU97 4k monitor with an NVidia GTX 970 card. In the end, the only thing that I could get to work for me was the two cable setup I mentioned earlier. This will not necessarily work for everyone, but it has worked for me for a couple of months now.

Interestingly, this problem has been reported on Mac OS (http://forums.macrumors.com/threads/nmp-windows-resize-after-waking-from-sleep.1757688/), so it is not limited to Microsoft Windows. It has been reported on multiple kinds of monitors, different video cards, and various versions of Windows. I could be wrong, but the common theme seems to be Display Port connections.

Although my Thinkpad T440s has a DP, I experience this issue with the laptop's own monitor, not with an external one.

BUT after the latest Windows 10 major update (1511) I am no longer experiencing this issue. Did they fix it? Is this a coincidence? Will it happen again tomorrow? I don't know, but I will keep this post updated.

I am able to reproduce the problem with multiple devices and monitors/TV's It's not limited to display port, I have seen it with HDMI 2.0 connection also.

Windows 8.1, 10, and now 10 threshold 2 x99 based i7 with dual GTX980's in SLI happened with a dual monitor setup (primary 1440p over DP, and 1080p secondary), single 4k setup (samsung 55in 4k 60hz over hdmi 2). I have tried extensive troubleshooting with this system including multiple registry edits and fresh os installs on a separate drive to rule out anything to do with changing monitor configs.

SurfaceBook i7 with dgpu. I have seen this happen in laptop mode and "clipboard" only mode so it doesn't seem like its the NVIDIA dgpu causing the issue. I have made changes to the registry to no avail. Doesn't happen every time on resume but frequently does. Started with windows 10 and continues on 10 threshold 2.

My work computer Q87 based i5 with GTX 750 on monoprice 4k 60hz monitor as primary and viewsonic 1080 secondary. Again extensive troubleshooting with registry edits and a reimage, spanned from windows 8 to windows 10 threshold 2.

Anybody have suggestions of other things to try? The dual cable option is not possible with my 4k TV or with the surface book (obviously). With my work PC I could, but I'm already driving a second display over dvi so I'd have to move that to vga...

Thanks and I can provide more details on my setup if it would assist anybody in troubleshooting this.
