Windows 7 moves/resizes windows on monitor power cycle

I have a new W7 ultimate install on a new PC (AOpen DEX4501 w intel GM45 graphics). I have installed the latest Intel graphics drivers 8.15.10.2202, and all relevant windows updates.

It is connected via HDMI to a Grundig Misuro HD TV. My resolution is set to 1600x900, windows recommended resolution is 1920x1080 but this displays badly so I don't use it.

When Windows sleeps, or I turn off (then later on) the monitor, most windows are moved/resized to the upper left with the lower right at 1024x768.

Firefox, Excel(2003),Explorer windows resize/move, Outlook(2003) did not move/resize.

I have a Samurize (Gadget like) display on the right which someimes get relocated to the top left, but not this morning. The windows resize/move also happens when Samurize is not running.

I have found three other entries related to this;

They don't seem to have been resolved for a long time.

This is a Windows monitor power managment issue, can it be fixed please it is very annoying.

I won't be recommending W7 to others with such issues outstanding.

I have found a work-around.

Using Sysinternals ProcessMonitor I found that Windows was accessing the following Registry path;

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\Configuration

My system had three entries;

DELF003YY7707BR0MUL_30_07D7_6A^9A3774EB79DEE3E3E38496CC7DF4D936

QHD32000001_31_07D6_D5^63E1ABDD175E7871DCAEB710418A0F75

SIMULATED_8086_2A42_00000000_00020000_1010100^CDE365D1B3F0942F0CF38BFB8E127AB4

Under each is a tree called "00" two of the keys are

PrimSurfSize.cx

PrimSurfSize.cy

Under "00" was another branch also called "00" two of the keys are;

ActiveSize.cx

ActiveSize.cy

The first two of the configs (ie DELF00... & QHD3...) the above keys were 1440x900,

so they were not involved.

The third (SIMULATED...) were set to 1024x768.

I changed these to 1600x900 and the problem was solved.

Further I changed resolution (via control panel) to 1920x1080, the moving/resize issue returned,

but the lower right corner was set to 1600x900, ie the SIMULATED... settings.

So for some reason one of the configs does not get set correctly.

I don't know why there are three configs, I have only ever used one monitor.

Firstly, many thanks to both MichaelAtOz & L.. T.. for the assistance here. My issues are not yet solved, but they are improved.

I have a Windows 8.1 x64 pro install, with NVIDIA Titan X GPU & Dell P2415Q (3840x2160) screen, connected by display port.

I was originally seeing all windows resized to 1024x768 and moved to the top left corner (even if smaller than 1024x768, but further out on my screen) every time the monitor went to sleep/powered off (even at windows instigation, not just when I turned off the screen at night).

With the changes described above (including changing the stride to 3C00 which is 3840x4, and the value in the obviously correct monitor configuration), I still find windows shrunk to 2560x1600 (or perhaps 2450x1440, I've not measured exactly where the bottom right corner is).

Obviously this is better than before, but still incredibly frustrating. How can Microsoft no notice this issue / resolve it as it will happen on EVERY 4K screen as they all use display port (or HDMI 2.0 in the future), so this must happen even inside Microsoft for their UI designers (I assume at least some of them will have 4K screens by now).

Does anyone have any further suggestions? This is a massive thorn in my otherwise beautiful 4K setup.

Gosh this sounds like the funny problem I am having. Maybe someone can help; I am about to reinstall Windows 10 Preview 10130 but I really rather not go through the hassle of reinstalling apps and apparently someone had the bright idea of taking away in place upgrade??? Whose bright idea was that. Anyway. Tried to run startup repair it fails. Tried to fix bootrec in command prompt but no luck. Here is my stupid silly problem. I have a dual boot setup. I have a dual monitor setup. One monitor is 1440p the other is 1080p. Windows 8.1 Windows 10. Windows 8.1 world is perfectly fine. So If I have it as my default the my choose operating system is correct res my login screen is correct res. If I set Windows 10 to my default OS the choose operating system screen is 1024x768 and my login screen is 1024x768. Once I login my res is fine. It's mainly an annoyance but it does bother me. I have this nice 1440p image as my login and it's broken now sigh. I am going to try the fix detailed here. Wish me luck. This is quite annoying.

Oh well I did find those keys but alas no luck in changing them. Same behavior remains. I guess I have a different problem. I am at a loss. Oh well I guess when I upgrade to Windows 10 it will sort itself out. If anyone has an idea I am all ears.

oh well it fixed itself with the new build that came out today but it would have been nice to know how to fix this when it happens. Like others are reporting i can imagine issues where it is difficult to login ot use recovery options...
