Windows 7 moves/resizes windows on monitor power cycle

I have a new W7 ultimate install on a new PC (AOpen DEX4501 w intel GM45 graphics). I have installed the latest Intel graphics drivers 8.15.10.2202, and all relevant windows updates.

It is connected via HDMI to a Grundig Misuro HD TV. My resolution is set to 1600x900, windows recommended resolution is 1920x1080 but this displays badly so I don't use it.

When Windows sleeps, or I turn off (then later on) the monitor, most windows are moved/resized to the upper left with the lower right at 1024x768.

Firefox, Excel(2003),Explorer windows resize/move, Outlook(2003) did not move/resize.

I have a Samurize (Gadget like) display on the right which someimes get relocated to the top left, but not this morning. The windows resize/move also happens when Samurize is not running.

I have found three other entries related to this;

They don't seem to have been resolved for a long time.

This is a Windows monitor power managment issue, can it be fixed please it is very annoying.

I won't be recommending W7 to others with such issues outstanding.

I have found a work-around.

Using Sysinternals ProcessMonitor I found that Windows was accessing the following Registry path;

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\Configuration

My system had three entries;

DELF003YY7707BR0MUL_30_07D7_6A^9A3774EB79DEE3E3E38496CC7DF4D936

QHD32000001_31_07D6_D5^63E1ABDD175E7871DCAEB710418A0F75

SIMULATED_8086_2A42_00000000_00020000_1010100^CDE365D1B3F0942F0CF38BFB8E127AB4

Under each is a tree called "00" two of the keys are

PrimSurfSize.cx

PrimSurfSize.cy

Under "00" was another branch also called "00" two of the keys are;

ActiveSize.cx

ActiveSize.cy

The first two of the configs (ie DELF00... & QHD3...) the above keys were 1440x900,

so they were not involved.

The third (SIMULATED...) were set to 1024x768.

I changed these to 1600x900 and the problem was solved.

Further I changed resolution (via control panel) to 1920x1080, the moving/resize issue returned,

but the lower right corner was set to 1600x900, ie the SIMULATED... settings.

So for some reason one of the configs does not get set correctly.

I don't know why there are three configs, I have only ever used one monitor.

Hope this helps someone out there...

I tried the registry fix on Win 10 but not having any luck. Did I do something wrong? I copied the keys exactly

I am only getting this with DVI-D. HDMI is fine. I have no idea how to get rid of this! I have an AMD R9 290 connecting to BenQ XL2411Z

Hi,

at first, thanks for sharing this.

I still have the issue though on my 2560x1440 screen. Tried to change resolution via TeamViewer already as well. I just saw the screen staying in the same resolution when turning the display off but then, when turning it back on, it resizes. So I don't have a chance to change the resolution.

I have tried yours now and already tried 2382398 other changes in the registry keys before but nothing will really work.

I also deleted the profiles in "ScaleFactors" and "Connectivity" already just to check if that will help me, still won't work.

Another thing I found a bit weird was that the windows seem to be in different spots every single time I changed something.

They haven't been in the exact same spots, however I had them in the same positions before turning the monitor off.

Somehow I already managed to get one window staying right on the very right side of the monitor but being resized in height. But at the next registry change that minimal success already disappeared again. :D

I don't know what to do or what to try anymore...

Any idea? :/

YES!

this resolves my issue with window positioning, with some extra additional work:

setup:

Single Dell 4K monitor connected via displayport DP

NVIDIA GTX 760 connected via DP

Intel i5 4960K, Z97

Windows 8.1

I found a ton of monitor configs in registry (migrated my windows from a laptop install so lots of legacy profiles).

I tried the initial fix of forcing 3840x2160 just on my dell monitor profile within the registry, however that did not work.

My fix:
1. I backed up the entire "configuration" registry keys, and deleted all of the monitor profiles.
2. Turn off monitor and turn back on; a new profile will have been created. turn off and turn on again to make sure the SIMULATED profile is also created.
3. Apply MichaelAtOz's fix with manual input of your desktop resolution (3840 x 2160 for example) and make sure the STRIDE entry is 4x multiple of your horizontal resolution (eg 3840*4 = 15360 STRIDE).
4. make sure the monitor profile and the simulated profile key entries match (my simulated one had different keys for Flag, Hsync, Vsync, and VideoStandard); just copy the values from the proper 00 profile.

Same for me. I do not have the option of a "simulated" screen in my registry on Win10.

I assume that ACR is my Acer screen and SAM is my Samsung TV, the resolutions fit them as well.

Both MS monitors though are on 1024x768, so these might be the simulated ones I think?

I don't know if that might cause heavy issues if I just try and still I don't know what "Stride" means, do I have to change that as well or just the resolution itself?
