Windows 7 moves/resizes windows on monitor power cycle

Hi Guys,

Thank you all for this discussion which helped me resolve my changing main display and changing display resolution issues.

I benefited from more than one recommendation listed in this discussion.

My set up is as follows:

One Samsung monitor connected to the ASAS internal GPU, three BenQ projectors connected to a Radeon R9 295 X2 thru the display ports and a Radeon R9 290 X with nothing connected to it yet.

I had the three BenQ projectors joint using Eyefinity (AMD Catalyst Control Center) to give me one large monitor 3840x800 for using it in flight simulation gaming.

My problem was that on each Windows restart the three projector setup became the Primary Display and all my icons and menu bar moved to there leaving my "control" monitor empty with a non-supported display resolution.

I tried every thing short of reinstalling Windows.

Here are the steps I used to resolve my issues:

1. In BIOS I set the Primary Display to the iGPU (intigrated GPU or built in graphics card on my ASUS mother board) where I connected one monitor (the Samsung monitor), the one I want to use as the Primary.
2. I restarted the machine and watched the startup procedure and the Windows launch icon come up on my Samsung, now Primary Display, up until Windows started when the displays shifted and the same problem presented itself.
3. Using RegEdit, I located the HKLM>System>CurrentControlSet>Control>GraphicsDrivers>Configuration key under which I found more than 20 entries! Perhaps every reinstalation of the drivers Windows does not clean up the older registry entries!
4. I exported the key and saved the ".reg" file on the Desktop, just in case I need it later.
5. I then deleted all entries under the Configuration key. (I was desperate :-) )
6. Restarted windows and found my SS monitor now marked as #1, my three projectors back separated into three single displays with #2/3/4 as should be.
7. I now downloaded and installed the latest AMD drivers/software.
8. Restarted Windows.
9. Launched AMD Catalyst Control Center and re-figured the Eyefinity set up for the three projectors to act as one large monitor.
10. During drive installation, many blank screens came ON and OFF and I ended up with the large single monitor comprising the three projectors and my single SamSung monitor, still numbered #1.
11. I redefined the Main Display and set all the resolutions to what I wanted (1280x800 and 3840x800) and ... Restarted Windows. (I believe Windows just loves restarting)

AND THAT worked!

I am now well setup, and no changes occur if I restart my computer.

I wanted to share this with you guys hoping someone will be helped as I was.

Initial testing running on 4k monitors, the 3 "simulated" keys fixed the issue on Win 8.1

I have a new W7 ultimate install on a new PC (AOpen DEX4501 w intel GM45 graphics). I have installed the latest Intel graphics drivers 8.15.10.2202, and all relevant windows updates.

It is connected via HDMI to a Grundig Misuro HD TV. My resolution is set to 1600x900, windows recommended resolution is 1920x1080 but this displays badly so I don't use it.

When Windows sleeps, or I turn off (then later on) the monitor, most windows are moved/resized to the upper left with the lower right at 1024x768.

Firefox, Excel(2003),Explorer windows resize/move, Outlook(2003) did not move/resize.

I have a Samurize (Gadget like) display on the right which someimes get relocated to the top left, but not this morning. The windows resize/move also happens when Samurize is not running.

They don't seem to have been resolved for a long time.

This is a Windows monitor power managment issue, can it be fixed please it is very annoying.

I won't be recommending W7 to others with such issues outstanding.

So far this fix is working for me as well. I am running Windows 8 on an HP desktop, and I have a Hanns-G 23" (1920x1080 resolution) LCD monitor connected to my tower via HDMI. Prior to this registry tweak I too had the issue with resized/moved windows. Thank you for posting this!

Oh, and you have three configs? I'll raise you six... and I too only have one monitor. ;)
