Although I am able to go through the "regular" process to associate a program with an extension it doesn't work. After going through the browse process and selecting the program it brings me back to the "open with" window. The program I've selected does not appear in the "open with" window and it appears that it is simply ignoring me.
I've also tried the "Default Programs" route but wind up at the same "open with" window that still ignores me.
Suggestions?

After playing around a lil I think I've figured it out.. [for me at least..]
The program that you're pointing to isn't registered correctly.
In regedit: Navigate to Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applicationsand find your .exe name.
Navigate under its name to shell>open>command. In the Default change its location to the actual location of the executable, hit okay and then try and reassociate the file type as you normally would.
Let me know if that doesn't seem to work.
I am a compurter dumy. I tryed these fixes and no worky for me. I keep getting confused and then get totaly lost and what to do?///??????????? Your above suggestions did not work.
Trying to associate files with .ppt, .pps, .ppsm, .ppsx, extensions an so forth with powerpoint 10 on a windows 7 64bit machine. However, the program does not appear in any dialogue box that facilitates file associations. Tries all your tips above and am still not winning. None of the threads that followed helped either.
Can you assist further?

Xandragnis, I have the same problem. I need to know what is...(your .exe name)? Is it what I named my computer? Also, how do I find it? I had Windows Vista and I upgraded it to Windows 7 with the 64 bits. I didn't have any problems until I upgraded. Can you make this more simple? There are people like me who don't know all the computer language...When you say...Navigate: do you mean, scoll down or go to Computer, because Windows 7 do not have My Computer. I went to YouTube and typed in the search: (How to fix the registry opening up in notepad glitch XP/Vista/7). There's a video to show people how to do it, but when I go to...Open with...it do not have the Choose Program on the menu. Please watch the video and answer me making it more clear to understand.
